I play a lot of Half-Life2 CS, and C&C generals (Zero Hour), many other games but not as much.

My setup right now is
AMD 64 3500, Over-clocked to 2.4GHz
DFI Lan Party NF4, with 1GB, X800XL Gcard
My Hard-drive setup right now is a Pata 160 Seagate drive with 32bit XP and 64bit on different partions. And a 250GB Sata Seagate for storage and I have my VM set to use this drive.

My question is I know that Raid 0 doesn't give my much more speed, but since I have another 160GB Pata drive sitting around not being used. I was thining of using Raid 0 on the two 160GB drives (Seagate and WD) and put my OS and games on it contuine to use the 250GB for storage and the diskswap (VM). I guess I'm just wanting my games to load faster and in C&C sometimes when I have 1K plus guys in a game (me VS 4 PC or friends) it starts to lag.

BTW I used to use my SCSI RAID and three 36.5GB 10K SCSI drives but that was too loud. External array with 3x PS too many fans too loud.

I'll be using the onboard Raid controller. It's a DFI Lan Party UT nF4-D
MotherBoard

Lag caused by 1k guys in a game will not be fixed with raid 0. For that you'd need more ram. faster processor, or a better video card.

Agreed, I'd bump up to 2gb of RAM, because per your sig, you have 1.5gb. Not sure how you'd be running dual channel in that configuration. That should help immensley.

I agree that more memory may help, but on my other gaming machine. (My old one) I have 4GIGs of RAM and ran into the same issue in C&C. I use this machine to host network games. The same problem happens, I have myself and 3-4 friends playing against 4 hard PC guys. Same issue, and there is still free memory. Network bandwidth isn't maxed out. Since the machine isn't doing anything, just watching I don't think that the video card is an issue either.

Specs on game hosting machine:
AMD 2100, 4GB PC2700, ATI 9700 pro (over-clocked), ASUS A7V333, 40GB WD HD

Besides the issue I'm having with C&C.

I have a extra drive why not use it in Raid 0? Would I be better off leaving my pagefile on the raid or on the 250GB drive.

I am no RTS performance expert, but from my experience it seems that a lot of units don't slow down the game due to HDD access, but simply because the gfx card and CPU cannot keep up.

Do you know of anyone that plays this game that doesn't have performance issues at that amount of units? If so, what specs are their systems faster in

I did a little googling, and found that many people have this issue, seems to be more common with ATI cards. My system is 2x what EA recomends. Seems that on the 8 player maps, due to software code that is buggy. It doesn't happen all the time, but is does happen at the worst times (During a LAN party)

The netcode in C & C is broken and sucks horribly. I've played on highly overclocked Opteron 170 based systems, 2 gigs ram, raptors and 7900 gt's and still had terrible lag in large multiplyaer games. End of story, this is a broken game.

As far as your needs go, I'd forget the raid 0. Sell both the 160g drives and use the money to buy one raptor. raid 0 has almost no benefit on the desktop.
