Okay, so I am building a home theater PC, and I want to be able to use my keyboard/mouse from a distance. Now whether I have to get a long USB or go wireless is irrelevant honestly, because I don't know how the hell I'm supposed to hold them both and be comfortable to game!?!

I am open to ideas here, because I'm moving away from my desk and into a HTPC gaming setup. There are space reasons in my apartment for that, and my desk is kind of a monster that I'm going to put on the side until I get a bigger place. An HTPC was always coming along, but I figure if I can game on it, even better! :)

Let me know if you folks have any ideas, I appreciate any.

For HTPC distance you are probably going to want a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I'm not sure how the lag is on them though.

I got the logitech MX revolution blah blah combo that came with a bluetooth keyboard and the MX revolution mouse. It works fine from about 5 feet or less, but more than that and there is noticeable input lag - I would guess around 100 msec when my mouse/kb were around 15 feet from the bluetooth dongle.

Again, the wireless/wired isn't the issue here. I am content with running a long USB cable if I really have to. I only game at night and I can wrap it up so it's not a big deal or an eyesore.

That said, I just don't know how I can accommodate that stuff on my lap. That's my main issue. So if you have any ideas that make a difference there, it would be greatly appreciated! Link to products is a plus for me :)

You can play a few games with an Xbox 360 controller, such as Grid and Just Cause 2 that work great with it.

I'm also gaming on the couch with a wireless 360 controller (as I've got an HTPC and projector) works great - most games have a profile and can be completely navigated without changing a setting

my trick would be to lay the keyboard on my lap and have a big cusion to my right to use the mouse on.

try phantom keyboard pad. it allows you to use mouse under the keyboard while they both rest on your lap.

or you could just buy a wireless keyboard with ball mouse attached.
