Im interested in budgeting a computer specifically for games. I have my MBP to do everything else. I happen to have a c2d e6500 laying around and I am considering trying to Utilize it, if it would save me a good amount of money. Since most games are more dependent on the video, I figured I would be ok with the c2d and a decent video card.
The e6500 far surpasses even the recommended specs for bf3. If I use the e6500 I can buy a cheaper lga775 motherboard and ddr2 ram. Should I bother or should I start looking at the i5-2500?
 
Had a G620 (based on anantech benches, it's about the equivalent of the E8200/8300/8400) trying to run BF3 at 1440x900 with a 6870 1GB.

The processor hardly pushed the GPU over 50-60% of utilization.

Found someone to swap an i5 2400 with.

Coming from an OCed Q6600 and having played BF3 on that (see specs below), I'd say the minimum 775 processor to play games like BF3 is with an OC'ed quad.

E6500 is a dual core... not quad. I'd say that it is nowhere near the recommended specs for BF3.

You'll probably get better performance out of an i3-2100 than the E6500.
 
I think DDR3 is HELL OF A LOT cheaper than DDR2, right? You might want to check that out, especially if you want 8GB-16GB ram (recommended for gaming @ 1080p ... IMHO)

You might be getting more "bang for buck" by going a DDR3 route.... like 50-100 savings, maybe... which can go towards that better CPU
 
i guess the recommended specs I found were different then the real ones. Thanks Gamestop..... Anouince false recommended specs, srsly who does that? I guess i will go with the i5-2500k guess i forgot the core 2 duo's age.
 
Do you happen to be near a MicroCenter? If so they are having a $60 off any z68 mobo with purchase of a 2500k (which is $179). With other rebates it's quite possible to get mobo/cpu/ram for close to $250.
