My Gateway monitor suddenly died yesterday - (2 year lifetime on a $600 monitor. Definitely gonna shop with them again.....not) and I've been looking at a replacement. The two monitors I am looking at are

Acer AL2216Wbd (22" TN)
DoubleSight DS-245W (24" S-PVA)

The main thing keeping me away from the 24" and bigger panels is that I want to be able to play at high settings on a normal resolution and there is no card that is gonna run Crysis maxed on a 24" unless I reduce the resolution. Are there any issues with running at 1280x1024 on these? If there's going to be a serious problem with image quality or whatever then I'll just go with a smaller monitor, but I really would love the extra desktop space.
 
I don't think crysis is a fair choice to base your monitor preference on. Anyways, it will definitely not look nearly as good as you want it to at 1280x1024 on a 24".

First of all, what video card do you have?
 
8800GT with E6750@2.66 (for now) . My monitor actually died the very day I got my new card in the mail. Crysis never graced it's screen.

I know I can run old games fine at full resolution/settings, but that is not going to be possible 1+ years down the road.
 
Well, I have an 8800gt myself and a 22" monitor. I can run Crysis on high basically on 1680x1050 res and it looks wonderful and plays very well. Some minor tweaks to the settings, but I'm happy with my 22".

Besides crysis though, the 8800gt can power almost anything at that res with no problem. Plus you get a nice boost with fov and such that the widescreen offers. I upgraded from a 19" and I haven't looked back since. :)
 
I was running Crysis at 1650x1080 on a 30'' and it looked fine (had to actually drop res later, it was too slow). I can't tell when a game is playing in non-native res. It's easy to tell with the desktop but not at all with the games.
