Gaming on an SFF

Is gaming on an SFF actually doable? I hope to build a new computer sometime soon (in the next coming months, hopefully before the new year), and thought it might be nice to look into a SFF.

This will pretty much only be a gaming machine, that might eventually pull some light web development / design duties. Right now I can't think of any games I'll play in particular, but basically modern / brand new games.

Also, I would not do a complete rebuild of my computer after that for... well easily 4 years. I would upgrade it from time to time. But at it's core, I'd keep most parts from the original build.

Just extra space restriction of adding a lot of HDD's.. and maybe difficulty of going SLI.. but there are alot of people who game on SFF.

Also to note, they are so much easier to carry to LAN -_-;; Other than the LAN's where they supply the computer for you :D
 
I've been wanting to put my 2nd machine into a SFF case to use as a LAN machine. My biggest issue with it is that good SFF cases cost more than I'm willing to spend to give a 4200+ / X800XT some more life.
 
Look up Coolermaster 340...

It's an microATX case and very small :D... And only 34.99 at Fry's. Fits full length Video Cards.
 
I can play World in Conflict with all graphical settings on high with barely any noticable slowdown (it supposedly goes down to 19 fps at worst case but I never saw that in actual gaming... only the in-game benchmark).

I have the following:

Core 2 Quad Q9300 (a Core 2 Duo would probably be better for gaming like an E8400 or E8500)
Intel DG35EC (again not the best choice for gaming)
nVidia 8800GTS (there are better ones out now for what I paid for mine... you can get a 9800GTX for about $200 now)
Areca RAID controller for 2 320GB Western Digital Caviar hard drives.

I think that's all that's really important for the performance of gaming. It's all currently powered by a 500W power supply.
 
Very possible to game in/with mATX...DFI's got an mATX board coming out that support crossfire as well and will hopefully overclock very well, only supports 8x PCI-E when using two cards though. :(

My next build is gonna be a fully watercooled Silverstone TJ08 system, check out the case...extremely well built, awesome cooling, and supports full sized PSU's.

That TJ08 is a nice little case, I helped a friend build a box in one of those like 2 years ago. I prefer the shoe box style SFFs, but if I went for a micro tower I'd probably pick one of those up. Silverstone cases are quality (I'm rockin' an SG-01e).
 
well that's good news. Not sure if I'll go SFF or not, but I am really interested in it.

Thanks man. The wiring was decent until I had to relocate my SATA cables and my PCI-Express power cables. Most of the wiring mess, especially at the bottom of the case near the mobo is hidden by the side panel.

I like it a lot it's nice to be able to perform very good for a smaller fee than most computers will set you back. It's also cool because you don't see many people with custom built SFF computers.

Not always too much of a smaller fee but definitely a smaller footprint..and that's what gets people most of the time. That's sorta why I don't wanna go as far as to have a huge radiator ontop of my TJ08...takes away from that minimalistic look.

heh I got a huge rad on top of my SG01, I started with minimalist..but when I went water it was too much of a hassle cutting junk around and I just went with the ridiculous look.

I have been looking at 1600-1800 for what I wanted in an ATX case, I ended up spending about the same amount of money, however I got a lot more (minus overclocking ability and such, but I wouldn't have used it anyways), like hardware RAID, 8GB RAM, and more storage space.

My case was even a fairly expensive one for micro ATX too (SG01). I think a lot of it is in the motherboards being cheaper.
 
I love the size. It's so convenient being in college, and just being able to throw it in the car and not worry about it when I come home for breaks. Plus I get a lot of complements on it :D (even the chicks like it... :p)

That's why I wanna push myself to keep my Shuttle as opposed to going with a mATX tower or Midtower again, being able to carry the Shuttle in a nylon carrying case with the LCD in a bag in the other hand...ultimate LAN system. :)
