Gaming on a Widescreen LCD?

Hey
I currently have a 17' LG 787 LE which I've used for gaming so the issue of gaming on an LCD isn't an issue. What I was wondering though was whether playing games like HL2, CS, Q4, FEAR etc. would be a problem on this model. http://www.acer.ca/acerpanam/page4....aram=CA&LanguageISOCtxParam=en&crc=2511344864
Obviously the picture on the site isn't the wide-screen LCD monitor i'm talking about. But can anyone think of any reason why it would inherently suck?
Thanks a lot for your input!

Not all games support widescreen. So you may need to doa little game hacking to adjust the Field of View and the default resolution setting. And you may get black bars on the sides. You may need to adjust video card setting to make your screen have black bars on sides so video games don't appear stretched.

But games like Half-Life2,Call of Duty 2, and AOEIII are widescreen enabled.

I have a gateway fpd2185W monitor myself, it pivots nicely, has many video inputs.
It's 16:10 ratio, good for movies, creates black bars for normal 4:3 video though, like TV, so I get black bars on side for TV, effectively making it a 19 inch for TV.

Windows Vista is going to be widescreen optimised though.

It would mainly suck if you play older games. 800x600 stretched to 1650x1080 will NOT look good! Some panels can keep a 1:1 aspect ratio and just have black bars around the edges, as mentioned. WS panels should come down greatly after wider adoption, though some, such as the Gateway mentioned, are reasonably priced if you're looking to shell out $$ for a screen...

I play quake 4 and css on my widescreen 23 inch lcd. Works fine. More games are supporting widescreen too.

why do people still make threads like this?

Wouldn't you think the Dell 2005FPW thread with 3414784784789 pages is a good indicator that widescreen is a good thing?

Don't let the widescreen junkies brainwash you, Tim. They get pretty feverish around these parts.

Personally, I find more cons than pros when it comes to widescreen gaming.

One of the biggest drawback is that not a lot of games actually support widescreen resolutions yet. As such, you have to hack your way in order for it to fill your screen, and a lot of times it ends up stretching the picture, or cutting off the horizontal. Support will surely increase as the newer games come out though.

Another con is the high hardware requirements to run the latest games at such a large resolution. Of course, if you don't care as much about frames-per-second, then this wouldn't bother you so much. But playing first-person shooters competitively, you want every frame you can get.

A final con is that widescreens aren't as fast yet as their non-widescreen counterparts.

The good thing about widescreens though, is that if you overcome all of those cons, the pictures looks friggin' sweet. It's huge.

CRXican:
thanks for threadcrapping. Find something better to do with your time than post useless things that no one wants to read.

To everyone else:
Thank you for your input, I think most people want resassurances when they buy things and USER reviews rather than ones made by hardware review websites etc. I'll definately think about what you guys said and make my decision :)

I got FEAR working WS no problem. A lot of games you can manually enter a resolution not natively listed.
