Gaming on a SSD vs HDD

What is the difference in performance between running a game on a SSD as opposed to a HDD? Obviously the game will load faster from windows, but is there any in-game performance difference?

Depends on the game really.

World of Warcraft for example benefits immensely from an SSD because you are constantly loading textures on-the-fly as you travel from one area to the next. With WoW on a mechanical drive, when you fly into a highly populated area such as a big city you will see some stuttering as the computer struggles to simultaneously load so many new textures. On an SSD though, it will be smooth.

In MMO's like Lineage 2 when getting close to a town it does not "stutter" anymore while loading the town.

+1, games like wow will excel with an SSD, even some high end guilds requiere an ssd to apply. Loading in the game and getting control of your caracter speeds up dramatically, also entering new zones, instances, reconnecting... and so on. But for most other games, just the faster loading, no real gaming performance gain.

Just wanted to add a +1 to those comments that others have said.

But if the choice of upgrading some other part comes up, or upgrade to an SSD, you might want to take the former. A new graphics card may help you a lot more in 90% of situations, even playing WoW for example, if you are already having "problems" with performance.

Honestly for WoW an SSD is probably the single best upgrade outside of having enough RAM and a multi-core CPU.

I mean if you are willing to spend the cash , an SSD will shave some time off loading in any game. Its up to the end user if they really want to put down around $200 for a reasonably sizable SSD but for most games you are only paying for a few seconds faster loading time at best. However if you make it the OS drive you get a much snappier OS and once you use it .. you'll never go back to a mechanical drive.

in BFBC2 9/10 I'll load into a round before most of the people playing.

that's the only difference I can tell w/ gaming on it lol

I don't have and SSD and i am in Costa Rica and i play on US servers and i have been first into servers numerous times, could be because i play the same maps often so they likely are in ram.

None, at all. Other than quicker load times.

Unless a game streams textures off of the hdd during gameplay like Fallout 3, New vegas, GTA4, wow, etc. It can help immensely in some games especially when using high resolution textures and other mods. My 20+ GB Fallout 3 folder runs smooth as butter on my ssd.

I keep most of my games on a HDD since they don't really benefit much from a SSD.

Solid-State Drive (SSD) Impacts on the Run-Time Performance of A-List Games

here is an intel rundown of performance with games and SSDs. you can listen to the presentation, very very informative. here is a few of the slides that you will see in the presentation.
SSDs make a HUGE difference in all games.
it is stuttering hitching and lagging that truly affect the performance. SSDs negate this.
There is so much hitching on an HDD that they measured the time that it took a character to run from Point A on a map, to Point B.
they ran the test then on an SSD, and were actually able to record a difference in the time it took the character to traverse the map. This is a huge testament to the speed making a direct performance impact.
here are a few slides you will see in the presentation.
