Gaming Mice

I posted a thread a few months ago, asking which wireless mice (technically 'mouses' in this context, I believe) would be a worthwhile venture for a gamer. The responses I got from that thread and others on other forums were largely:

Don't go wireless
Logitech MX700
Logitech MX1000

I never really got around to purchasing a mouse, but I'm looking again as I'd like to give my old one to my laptop. Computer hardware growing as fast as it does, I thought I'd post to get some fresh perspective with the new mice in town.

I play alot of FPS and RTS games, so my largest concern is the delay inherent to some wireless mice. If I can notice a difference between it and a wired mouse, I'd prefer the wired mouse. This time around I'm going to look into wired mice as well, though I think I'd prefer a wireless one (as long as it comes with a recharging station). So can anyone give me any suggestions? After a little initial research, the ones I have my eye on are:

Logitech MX518 (wired)
Logitech MX700
Logitech MX810 (I think that's the number, I saw it at Best Buy)
Logitech MX900
Logitech MX1000

If you can't tell, I have great faith in Logitech, but I'm open to other mice as well. Razer's Diamondback Plasma LE certainly looks sharp, and Razer has a good name for gaming mice.

So what has everyone heard about these mice and others for gamers? I'm open to both wired and wireless (though wireless scores more points, as long as there is no decernable lag and has a recharging station).

Thanks in advance!

I highly recommend the MX518, and I reviewed it here, if you are interested. I preferred it over the MX1000, because I had better control.

I just wish they made a cordless gaming mouse that was as dead-on as the MX518 or a Razer. That Plasma mouse does look pretty sweet too though.

I haven't tried many of the other mice there but I've been using the MX700 for a while now. I'm not an incredibly "hardcore" gamer but I've had no issues whatsoever with this mouse. Even though it's wireless it has been quick enough for me and I haven't experienced any noticeable lag in games. I think it is safe to say that Logitech is a good brand to go with. My previous mouse was a corded Logitech optical mouse that I used just about everyday for close to 3 years and it is hardly worn out. It has now been relegated to back-up duty for use with my laptop.

Yeah, I really want a wireless mouse, but I worry too much that it'd hurt my gameplay. I'm looking closely at the 518 and the diamondback. Is logitech's premier gaming mouse? Is it essentially a replacement for the 700?

Thanks for your response, I'm reading your review right now.

EDIT:
Finished reading the review. I really like the ability to switch the DPI on the fly, that's awsome. I think the diamondback supports it as well. One question, though. When switching it, I imagine there are buttons that'll move it up and down like a volume control. But can you assign and hot-bind set DPIs? For example you'd have your 800 for running around and in the press of a button switch to 1600 to do a 180? Or like running around with the sniper rifle at 800 and then switch to 400 super quick when aiming it? Or does the range switch quick enough that it doesn't matter?

Thanks again!

Heh, that' s the exact same situation I'm in. Although my optical mouse is going on 5 years or so, it's definitely going to migrate to the laptop.

Definitely do not go with the MX700. I'm an avid CS player and that thing drove me nuts. The MX1000 is quite a bit better. IMO, it still doesnt have the feel of a wired mouse for some reason. Also, the MX1000 has this weird "bump" effect at random times that just gets on my nerves. I do, on the other hand, love playing Doom 3 on my 52" HDTV with the MX1000 because I can sit on the couch and play with the wireless mouse/keyboard.

The Razer has a feature that sets the sensitivity or something (it works in a different way to Logitech's way according to a colleague of mine). But I don't use it, so can't comment on it.

The Razer (I have the Chameleon) is a fantastic mouse. Even before getting into a fps I could feel a diiference. The only thing I didn't like was the fact they announced the Plasma 2 days after I placed my order, and the Plasma would go with my PC much better!

Looking through the options, I can't see that, but that's a GREAT idea. Just for the record, the lowest you can go is 400, so 180 wouldn't happen :)

I'll see if I can pass that along to Logitech and hope for it in a future SetPoint version.

he wasn't saying that he would set the DPI to 180, he was saying switch it to 1600 to perform a 180 degree turn.

I'm in the same stuck as most ppl here. To go wireless or not. I generally like the feel of the MX1000 but not so much the mx518. I'm mostly a sniper in CS:S (yes, an awpwhore  ), so quick reactions are key. I'm leaning more towards the MX518 just because of the responsiveness and sensitivity adjustment (and it's cheaper).

My bad, see that now.

Awpwhore's are not allowed to use good mice! :p

For Awpers such as yourself though, the MX1000 is great precision.. but the overall control is not up to par as the MX518. I personally can't game on the MX1000, because the responsiveness is not perfect :/

that's what i thought. I'll stick with wired. i know! I'll get both!!!!

nah......that'll never happen :p

I have the MX510 and I absolutely love it, although the problem u stated about the MX1000 in ur reveiw of the MX518, about how when u picked the MX1000 up, that's been fixed.... They have a new batch of MX1000 and that problem has been fixed.

Well, I happen to have a new version of the MX1000 as well, the dark blue version that comes with the MX3100. (At least I believe they are the newer versions)

I'll try to test that out later. If that problem was taken care of, then yay! I would be seriously happy.

Never go wireless for gaming, the response time is much slower, and the batteries die. I have both wired and wireless mice, and wireless are great for anything BUT gaming.

Also, one time my batteries died on me while sniping in Farcry. :(
