Ive noticed that my 19" crt seems to have gotten darker as the years have gone buy (had it for a little over 4 years). I play a lot of games on my pc, and thats the biggest problem with it. Everything is wayyyy too dark on most games. It wasn't until I played games on a friends monitor that I realised it's way to dark. I tried upping the brightness on the monitor itself and on the ati control panel, but no go. Basically I'm looking for some input on a reasonably priced 17" LCD thats good for gaming. Ive been checking out the Acer AL1714CB on newegg (249.00 shipped) but it doesnt seem to be liked much by [H]'ers. the reviews on newegg seem really good tho, so im not sure what to do. I cant find any reviews about it elsewhere tho. if anyone has any input on the acer, or has any other recommendations please feel free to post (under $300 plz).

i'd say anything under 16ms response time will suffice, thats really my own perference, im not too caring about contrast ratios or viewing angles....meh...
 
You have a Micro Center in your town; they carry a pretty good selection of LCDs. Go play with them. Find your friendly “gamer guy” sales person and as a rule they will let you hook up almost anything to anything. Last time I was there they had a Doom3 demo going, should give you an idea about what you will actually see at home.
 
thanks billr, thats a good idea. i played doom3 on a 6800 ultra and 17" lcd there one day, shit was fast as fuck. thats when i knew my monitor was way too dark and my 9800 pro wasnt the shit like it used to be. i think ill take a trip there b4 the weekend catch me.
 
I enjoy my 2001FP a lot. There is almost no ghosting in games, but there is one problem everyone should be aware of: if you are going to play on an LCD you are practically forced to use v-synch if you want good quality visuals. This can really slow your system down if it can't handle the game pretty well already.

Overall though I am extremely happy with my purchase, and not only for games.
 
I agree with most here that gaming LCDs need to be 16ms or lower. any higher, you really start to see it... at 16 it's almost not there...
 
when it comes to gaming on lcd's what else should I look for besides the response time? the acer has 14ms response time, so there's no problem there.....

look for a good contrast ratio normal ones are about 400:1 better ones are in the 600: to 700:1 range...

best thing if you can is to go look at some LCDs and make note of the specs, and what it looks like...
 
What about how the LCD handles dark areas in games? I noticed mine in dark areas looks almost as if the colors are negative. Dark areas in games and my monitor don't mix well heh
 
There are 8ms, 12ms, 16ms .....

Lcd's don't do dark colors as good as Crts.

When you get a Lcd you should accept the downside of doing so.

Changing out of native resoution is a crappier stretched image.

And ghosting ingame.

Yeah LCDs dont have a "true" black to them. and they all do it... so you must take that in account...
 
so in a game like doom3, dark areas dont look right? i remember playin it on a lcd at microcenter and it didnt seem awkward to me (only played for like 5 minutes tho).

the contrast ration of the lcd im thinkin about is 370:1, not sure if thats high enough
 
If you love your game just get a CRT, they are better. It comes down to that. If you dont mind rthe lacking performace then check out the 710T its great for games and no ghosting from what I hear.

CRT- 930SB or 2070SB

LCD- 172x or 710T
