gaming lag on hdtv

I am using my htpc for gaming on a plasma hdtv. The TV is a Hitachi 55HDS69 and the computer is using a GeForce 7800GT. The problem I'm getting, is that there is a noticeable lag from the time I move my mouse, or press a button, to the time that the event actually shows up on the TV. I know it's not just a problem with the computer because I get the same problems when playing console games on the TV. I play FPS games such as Counter-Strike and Battlefield 2 and it makes it almost impossible to play these games when there is lag like this because I cannot aim right. I would estimate that the lag is somewhere around 1/5 to 1/10 of a second. I was reading another article and it said that console games would get this lag because the output from them was in standard definition so it took some time to upscale the signal to be displayed on hdtv's. The resolution I am currently running is 1216x692. Is the resolution the problem? Do I need to have the graphics card set to the native resolution of 1366x768? Do I need powerstrip? Any help would be appreciated.

it could just be that the refresh rate on the tv is really high, IE upwards of 45ms.

From what I understand, this kind of lag comes about when the TV needs to do a significant amount of postprocessing on the signal, causing that delay. I'd try setting the output of your video card to match the native res of the tv like you were thinking. If that doesn't work, you may have to go into your TV's settings, see if you can access the section on signal processing, and disable what you don't need. Some TVs even have a "game mode" that'll do that for you. Good luck!
