I am looking for card to game in 2k resolution at 60hz, for modern games. (the monitor is actually 4K)

Would this be a good card?

ASUS STRIX GeForce GTX 970 Overclocked 4 GB DDR5 256-bit DisplayPort HDMI 2.0 DVI-I Graphics Card

also what about this card? would it be overkill?

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB SC+ GAMING ACX 2.0+, Whisper Silent Cooling w/ Free Installed Backplate Graphics Card 06G-P4-4995-KR

so you mean 1080p right? If you want to game at 1080P the 970 will be sufficient for most games IIRC off my head (just check a tech power up review). The 970 is a decent card to get for the time being because you can easily upgrade this coming summer to next gen and save 300 bucks by not getting a 980ti. If I only wanted 1080P gaming I would grab a 970 personally or the AMD equivalent and hold out. Next gen will be a huge jump in performance per buck and if you already got a 4k screen upgrading to a flagship next gen card will allow you to actually game at 4k.
With my 980TI OC I can game at 4k high AA and medium everything else in Ark with reasonable frame rate. I plan on getting the next gen card and that should hopefully allow me to get 4K high or maybe even better.

I am sorry I mean would be gaming at this resolution:

2556x1440

then you want a 980TI hands down but remember next gen cards are not too far out and will be a 50-100% increase in performance. So plan on wanting to nab a next gen card no matter what you buy.

Also why game at 1440p on a 4k screen...yuck it must look liek crap because of the pixel layout issue. Just get a 1440p 120hz IPS at that rate. I plan on getting that Asus G sync one in the next few months when it comes out. I want my damn blur reduction!!!! I miss my CRT days :/

oh hell yeah it is now out

Must find some money now :D

If your budget can afford it, the 980 Ti would have better performance. That said..... with the next generation of Nvidia video cards due fairly soon, don't piss away your money.

The 970 is a great card for 1440P. I'm gaming at 1440P on a 960, and it's pretty fantastic. I don't enable filters and just go with the recommended settings from GeForce Experience, and it seems to run fantastically. (I'm not as focused on graphical shinyness as I used to be)

when is the new cards coming out?

no one knows eaxactly yet but IIRC correctly their ETA is Q2 2016 and they are said to be 2x transistors and 70% faster so assume 50-100% faster if they have 2x transistors...thats pretty fucking massive :D

I am hoping the same time as last year personally.

Yeah, if you must game now at 1440p get the GTX 970. Everything else is too expensive unless you're a hardcore gamer who insists on maxing everything out.

You can GET BY with a GTX 960 at 1440p, but newer games will have more trouble.

what's the point to buy a NEW videocard to start reducing Graphical settings from the beginning?. I know that not everyone have a unlimited budget, but common, the GTX 960 is a weak card, barely capable to do 1080P with high/ultra settings let alone to be able to enjoy 1440P gaming.. again what's the point? oh good Im at 1440P but with medium settings great..

If you are playing very old games then yes, the 960 is a capable card. but its already weak for today games, its a card that work as a backup card or similar.. it will not last even one year before start to be obsolete.. the bare minimum card for 2560x1440 is the GTX 970.

BTW I wanted to correct myself....I hate Asus product codes. The monitor was PG279Q and that isn't out yet the PG278Q is. Just wanted to post back and correct that. Stupid asus product codes. Everything uses like the same scheme so a totally different monitor can pop up with 1 off number or even letter grrr

I had a single 980ti and got crazy great framerates on my Acer xb270hu. barely went under 90fps in most games at 1440p.

Call me old school but I just play my games cranked up but no fsaa, or AA. I never was bothered by aliasing and at 1440 I'm really hardpress to notice it in anything other than screen shots.

Yup same here (except I'm still on 1440p + single 980 ti). All forms of AA have some downsides which bother me more than the benefits they bring, especially with something like 1440p @ 27" which is really sharp and clean to start with. Yes I can see some jaggies here and there but it's really not that bad. On the other hand even just 2X AA is such a big hit on framerates (especially minimums) and VRAM usage I can't live with it. How well or badly it performs varies greatly from game to game. Rather crank up textures/LOD/shadow details etc. all the way up.
