I am in the market for a gaming headset. I used my brother's Logitech G35 and it sounded great in the BF3 beta. Is that pretty much the gold standard for gaming headsets right now? Although it's USB and doesn't take advantage of my creative sound card...

I have used the G35 for almost 2 years - I know because I just had it replaced for the second time and my warranty is up in December.

I am sure the $350 analog headsets are very nice, but this is what works for me on the G35:

1. USB means I can plug / unplug at will and it disables and enables my 5.1 system accordingly.
2. The G35 uses the Dolby Headphones system which I enjoy when playing games (especially BC2)
3. I like the mute light - I mute myself a lot when people come in and it reminds me to unmute.
4. Every analog headset / sound card I have had has always ended up with some kind of static / short problem

If you only want to spend around $100, the G35 is a great choice. If you have have impeccable taste in sound reproduction, then I would wonder why you are playing games instead of listening to music but you probably won't care much for the G35s.


One caveat: The swivel joins on the G35 are made of plastic. If you drop the headset or continually stress those joints, they will break. It's a pretty stupid design issue, but if you are careful and they won't be used by kids or your spouse (warranty incident 1 and 2) then go for it.
 
Well I am about to get another 560Ti and SLI. So i wont have room for my soundcard anymore. So i guess I need to find a headset that comes with a better soundcard than my onboard one. Those headphones are nice but I am just playing games and listening to MP3 files mostly. So i don't need that high of quality headphones. Are there any other headphones that maybe have a better soundcard in them than the G35's?

I give three examples and you pick a fight with the $350 example. Bravo.

1> If you are too lazy to swap cables and switch settings on your computer from 2.1 to 5.1 then what are you doing on a PC. www.apple.com might have something more in line with your taste.

2> The G35 uses dolby headphone. Nothing wrong with dolby headphone. But by having it built into the headset, you are limited at only dolby headphone. The latest creative cards use CMSS and with gaming, CMSS out positions dolby headphone in 3d. Ever consider upgrading to a DAC you are sol with a USB headset.

3> It is best to pick a headset based on it's primary purpose. That is for sound reproduction. If it happens to come with a mic then good. But you are severely limiting your choices to mainly sub par USB "Gaming" headsets.

4> You are talking as if USB headsets go without fault? Speak for yourself on this one. I have been using dedicated sound cards for years and have yet to run into such issues. Can't properly setup a sounds card, sounds like you need a mac.

A headset is all about sound reproduction. Telling the OP if sound is an issue with the G35 that he should instead be listening to music is a bit shallow. How about just getting a real set of cans in the first place? Problem solved!

What mobo are you using and what is your budget? Even when going SLI I'm pretty sure that there will be a free PCIE 1x somewhere on your board. If not, getting an external USB DAC is also a consideration. Think of it as an external sound card.

I use this motherboard, I can't link it because its not available anymore. Bought it as soon as sandy bridge came out and all that crap came out with the motherboards were bad. So its not available anymore.

I guess I would have a free PCIE slot, but the problem is where my desk is and how big it is. I can't hook anything to the back of my computer without it being a hassle. So I couldn't plug a good pair of headphones directly into the soundcard. I am looking to spend around $150ish for a nice gaming headset. When I was using my brother's logitech G35's to play the BF3 beta I was just blown away how good everything sounded. I'd get them but I just want to make sure they are the best at my budget.
 
Yeah the first expansion slot on that motherboard is a pci-e x1 shot. So you are in luck.

I have the same issue as you. Getting behind the PC is a real PITA. So I have my front panel connector hooked up to my Xonar DX. Since I'm not using any top of the line cans, routing through the front panel really isn't going to diminish the sound quality by any noticeable means.

If your case lacks front panel connectors, you can always use a 3.5 M/F extension cord. They are cheap and will do the trick.

If you could score one of these you would have the best gaming sound card currently available. For under $50 it's a steal. Pair it with the AD-700 and you would have a killer sub $150 setup that would lap the G35. Of course that means using your current mic or some other desktop or clip on mic. Under $10.

If you are really stuck on USB. Then the Logitech G35 isnt bad for what it is. Corsair actually makes a good line of USB gaming headsets too that you may want to also consider.

[H] gave the Corsair HS1A a good review. The Corsair Vengeance 1500 are newer and I would only expect them to be a better product.

My recommendation would still be with getting a dedicated sound card and headset. Get whatever best fits your situation.
