Gaming Headphones. Complicated??

Okay, I know there are tons of threads about headphones for gaming. My big question is this - after reading through a bunch of threads in the Computer Audio section of this forum, I'm scared. :-P
Since when do we need amps for gaming headphones? I mean, I'll admit, I never got into high-quality audio, but I thought amps are for studio work, mixing, etc.

Basically, I want to spend between $50-100 and be able to have a great gaming experience. As in, good bass, soundstage, I want to feel like I'm in the game (not trying to sound cheesy). And I want to be able to hear exactly where sound is coming from. Is it necessary to have an amp for this?? If not, what would you all recommend?

for your pricerange you dont need an amp... Only the higher OHMS headphones needs amping to make them sound the best.

Anyways for little over $100 and gaming... defintely recommend the Audio Technia A500. PERIOD. They are closed... has a hell of a soundstage, nice bass, but pretty big....

For something cheaper but sounds alike/very closed to the A500, around $65 bucks online, the Sony MDR-XD400. Looks similar but not exactly, has a nice soundstage, although the A500 is a little bigger. closed also, and nice and tight bass. ( I got a pair for $40 shipped to your door btw hehehe )

I have the hd 280s. They sound great and I can't hear anything but the game with them on. What's more to say?

between 50 to 100 will be tough. My gold standard for gaming headphones are the DT770's by Beyerdynamic. Great soundstage (as I've said in other threads, I am able to pinpoint exactly where gunfire is coming from), really good bass (to the point where I throw grenades for the hell of it ;) ). If you get the 32-ohm version of the DT770's (like I have), there is no need for an amp.

oh yeah, the A500's are really good too, but I like the DT770's soundstage

I had the A500's before I bought the DT770's, if it means anything...

I really want the DT770's, but $150 or whatever they are is WAY too much for me. I just dropped enough on my Conroe upgrade. :-P

Basically, coming from my crappy e-dimensional vibrating headphones, will the Sony MDR-XD400's be good for me? Any other $50-100 ones (100 being absolute maximum) that are pretty good? Or how much do you think I could get DT770's for used? Or the A500 ones?
(And is it bad to buy used headphones??)

Heh, sorry. Lots of questions.

Personally, I wouldn't buy used headphones. The previous user could have done anything with it, including sweat on them and touch them after scratching his/her crotch rigorously.

Yea, lots of stores won't even let you try headphones before you buy them now because it is un-hygenic. The only way I would buy used headphones is if the earpads are replaceable.

After a bit of research, a lot of people feel that the Dt770's are a really good headset, however, are there any of them that have a mic attached?

sadly no but these companies could make big business by taking their popular designs and just adding a mic.

I am also planning to get headphones specifically for gaming. I think I am going to go with the Beyer DT770/80. I spend hours reading numerous threads at head-fi and the AT-900s sound like they are great for gaming and do not need an amp. Might be out of price range but they appear to be really good for gaming if you don't want an amp.

Doesn't Beyer have an aviator headset that is supposed to be just like the DT770s but with a mic? HS-300 I think it was. Not sure if they are the same headphones though.

i have heard that the hs-300s are like dt770s with a mic but again i could be wrong.

As for headphones in dingobiatches price range...there isnt really much of a choice besides the ath-a500s.. you can always do the "blu-tack" mod on them to improve the sound a little bit. you could also go for the ath-a700s which are just a little bit more then the ath-a500s

I've heard of people being "wow'd" away by the ath-a500's, if that says anything:) I'd recommend savin up 50-60$ m0 for a dt770/80 though. The soundstage is great, as has been said before, and the bass is rediculous, e.g. "...really good bass (to the point where I throw grenades for the hell of it.)"

*edit* I run the dt770/80 unamped, and it still owns for big explosions in bf2. I just tried F.E.A.R for the first time last night(the developers are giving away the multiplayer FOR FREE--"F.E.A.R COMBAT"--I suggest u go download it!), and the positioning on the dt770's were responsible for about 90% of my kills. Yup, they're that good:p I can hear ppl through the walls exactly where they are at, take a corner and zoom in, and BAM GOTCHA BIIIATCH!! hehe sorry, lol:)

*edit* why was wikipedia banned? Am I next? :(
