Is there a 'best' hdd in terms of speed and response time besides SCSI? I'd rather not buy a controller card and extra parts if possible. Could I actually tell a performance difference by getting a hdd faster than the 7,200 rpm that I'm currently using?

scsi has many technologies such as comand quing that allow it to do many things more inteligently than a ide drive
the scsi drives are also built to a higher standard and tend to be more reliable

as for gamming
gamming off of my 10k 73gb (16mb cache) HD is definetly faster than it was off of my previous 80gb 8mb 7.2k ide
much much faster with load times

its running on a u160 64bit adaptec controller i picked up off of ebay for $65

the scsi cable with terminator was $35

and the drive was $200 used
