Hey guys, I need a little help. I am building a gaming machine and wanted to know the best one to use. I have the following machines available to me.


Machine #1

Athlon 64 3200+ 1mb L2 cache
Asus K8V-SE DEluxe MB
1GB Mushkin Dual Channel Ram (PC3200)
High Tech 9800 Pro
36GB Western Digital Raptor
160GB Seagate secondary drive.


Machine #2

Intel P4 3.0c 800Mhz 512k L2 cache
Intel 875PBZLK Mother board
1GB Mushkin basic PC3200 Ram
Abit 9600XT 256MB Video Card
120GB Seagate AtA-133 Hard Drive


My question(s) are:

1. Which machine would be best to play Doom 3 or HL2 on?

2. I can mix and match hardware between the two systems, what modifications would you make?

system 1 will be the best choice... by quite a bit id say. you have more space, twice as much l2, better video card..
 
I am sorry but no one in thier right mind would recommend a pentium 4 3.0c over an athlon 3200+ as a gaming machine.
 
system #1 hands down is faster might want a better for card for Doom3 like a 6800NU or GT

There will be little difference in performance for gaming between those two processors. The first system will be faster though because it has a 9800 pro and the second only has a 9600XT.
 
In gaming performance there would be a pretty nice difference between the 3200 and Intel CPU. If you are building it why do you ahve us choose between 2 options?
 
Not sure he's building it, he has them available.

I'd definitely go for #1. D3 loves AMD chips now.

For HL2, the faster vid-card is king, and #1 has that as well.


For media ripping/encoding, errrmm... #2, but marginally.
Overall #1 is, well, #1 for what you have laid out as priorities.
 
Thanks for the input, I was leaning towards machine # 1, you guys just confirmed it.
