Looking to build a midrange gaming computer for my friend. He's looking to game and plans to play a little WoW, and Diablo 3 and Starcraft II when they come out. He will be playing at 1650 x 1080 and likes eyecandy. He doesn't really plan on doing anything more intense than gaming.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc

Primary purpose is gaming, other use is just basic computer use.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

$800 shipping not incl

3) Where do you live?

AZ

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.

Everything incl. OS, keyboard, mouse

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

Two 22" monitors.

6) Will you be overclocking?

No.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?

22"x2

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

Within the next couple of days

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.

Nothing in particular. Just want a solid motherboard.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?

No, will be using 64 bit.

Thanks for your help.

We built the same AMD build, give-or-take a few dollars. The NSK is a nice improvement over the Sonata, and saves $10 + free shipping :)

The spinpoint vs deskstar is debatable...

But your XFX combo + 925 processor is bad, because that's the overclocked version of the 5770 that costs $190. Even with the discount, that's more than the $165 model I linked above. It also locks you into that 2.8 GHz processor, which is a little underpowered (3 GHz is only $15 more). He's not going to overclock, so he needs as much stock processor speed as he can get :)

ALSO: original poster, if you or the friend are students, you can get Windows 7 for just $30:

Thats why we post 'em ;) Sometimes takes a combination of two lists to see it all :)

Nice build by gwarren007. But, I agree with defaultuser. No O/C on the cpu then he should up the cpu to at least a 3.0GHZ. Also, if you can't find a friend or someone whose a student, let's go with these. Working off gwarrens build

CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0Ghz for $149.99 w/free shipping

O/S/VIDEO CARD - MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit + XFX Radeon HD 5770 both for $259.98 w/free shipping

Total for this along with the parts from gwarrens list would make it $744.88 w/shipping

Thanks for the help guys. We went with a Core i5 750 system with an XFX HD 5770 and 4GB of G. Skill Ripjaws. Will update when the build is done.

IMO that's too much CPU and too little GPU. Hope you have another PCI express 2.0 slot for crossfire...

not bad. overkill on the CPU for gaming, but should last a while. it all fit within $800 budget? don't forget to post pics!
