1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
All of the above, with emphasis on gaming (BC2, MoH, SC2, ME2, L4D2, etc). Everyday machine, gaming, autocad, matlab, movies, etc.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
about 600-945 including shipping/tax

3) Where do you live?
MA, Microcenter is out of the way but willing to buy parts from there only if it's absolutely necessary.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
CPU, MOBO, RAM, case, PSU, optical, video card

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Samsung F3 500gb hdd, Intel X25-V 40GB SSD

6) Will you be overclocking?
Yes

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
22" 1680x1050, with possible upgrade to 1920x1200/1080

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Now ----> one week

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
Nothing in particular... Crossfire or SLI would be nice I suppose.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
Windows 7 Pro 64bit

Other comments
Looking to use this computer until at least winter of 2011. Not looking to upgrade before then. Maybe add another video card for crossfire/SLI in between if necessary, but that's it.

My preliminary build.

179.98 - Lian Li PC7FN + 2x2GB G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 1600

309.98 - AMD 1055t x6 + ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3

99.99 - XFX 650W Modular PSU

199.99 - Sapphire HD5830

Maybe GTX 460 1GB if I can find any in stock, but lose possibility of crossfire

18.99 - Asus DVD-RW

33.97 - T-LM24B-2 Top Cover + 140MM fan
39.95 - Scythe Kaze Master Pro 3.5" Fan Controller

Total - $842.85 after $40 rebate

Heatsink - looking for something black ish / blueish for the theme

62.99 - Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme
74.99 - Corsair H50

~950 after heatsink purchase.

How far is out of the way? You could save $80 on an i7 930 there and have budget for an X58 build.

i7 build?

289.98 - EVGA X58 SLI LE + Lian Li PC-7FNW
Different motherboard though? Gigabyte X58A-UD3R / ASUS P6X48D-E / EVGA X58 FTW3 ?
164.99 - Corsair 3x2GB DDR3 1600
219.98 - XFX 5770 + XFX 650W PSU
18.99 - DVD-RW
213 - i7 930 from Microcenter

Total - 906.94 (- 50 rebate) = 856.94

Thermalright ultra 120 extreme - 59.99
Fan controller - 39.95
Top panel + 140MM fan - 33.97

Total ~ 1000

So I drop down to a 5770 but I upgrade to an i7 930 + 6GB ram for roughly 50 dollars more? I'm wondering if the 5770 can handle future games at 1920x1080/1200 if I do upgrade my monitor.

What's more important? Gaming performance or your AutoCAD/Matlab performance?

For gaming at 1920x1200, the HD 5770 would barely be sufficient with a mixture of low to medium settings.

And you never really answered this question: How far "is out of the way" for MC?

Oh and ditch the Corsair RAM and go with this equally performing RAM instead:
$150 - G.Skill F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ 3 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM

Gaming is probably more important. I would only consider MC if I can get a great deal within my budget. The i7 build is closing 200+ dollars plus the two hour drive to MC but if I can get even greater performance from MC without spending more than yes I will be willing to do it.

289.98 - EVGA X58 SLI LE + Lian Li PC-7FNW
99.99 - XFX 650W PSU
334.98 - Sapphire HD5830 + OCZ 3x2GB DDR3 1600
18.99 - ASUS DVD-RW
213.99 - Intel i7 930

Total - 957.93 (-80 dollars in rebate) --> 877.93

So this leaves room for the heatsink, fan controller, and other accessories.

Well in that case, a Core i7 930 setup is not worth it in your case and your budget. With a single GPU setup for just gaming, the Core i7 930 does not offer enough of a performance increase to justify the higher mobo costs and higher RAM costs. Unless you're gonna do a multi-GPU setup right out of the box, no point in getting the Core i7 930, especially since there's the added 2 hours drive.

You should be able to fit in a Core i5 750 setup. Here's a prelim build:
$285 - Intel Core i5 750 CPU + Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 Intel P55 mATX Motherboard Combo
$180 - Lian Li PC-7FN ATX Case + G.Skill F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM 2 x 2GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$370 - XFX HD-585X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5850 1GB PCI-E Video Card + XFX P1-650X-CAG9 650W Modular PSU
$19 - Asus DVD Burner
---
Total: $854 plus tax and shipping.

Plenty left over for the HSF, fan controller, etc.
