I built an economy ($1,000) computer for buddy and 2 out 3 games I installed are not running well. I installed Doom 3, Farcry, and COD. Only COD is running smooth and it is older game. I'm getting decent timedemos in Doom 3: 80 fps on demo 1 at 1280x1024, High Quality, no AA. Actually playing Doom 3 or Farcry is not that great. Sluggish and stuttering. Sometjimes when I press button to shoot it does not happen immediately. I get stuttering when moving and/or turning around. Changing resolution and AA has no impact. Doom 3 and Farcry play very similar at 800x600 and 1280x1024.

Components:
EPoX 8KDA3I
Athlon 64 3000+ 754 (@2,100 MHz)
eVGA 6800GT (@420/1115)
Corsair 3200 512 mb ram
WD 7200 rpm SATA 160 gb drive (WD1600JD)

I'm running winXP home with SP2 and all updates. Direct X 9C. I have tried 4 different graphics drivers and 3 different nforce drivers. Curretly running Forware 71.81 and nforce 5.10.

System is rock stable after 12 hours Prime95 Torture Test (at above overclock). Idle temps are 27 system, 35 CPU, and 53 GPU (at above overclock). GPU gets up to about 60 when gaming.

I have tried running at stock speeds, changing AGP aperature size, and turning off sideband addressing and nothing has worked. vsynch is off. I would hope that this is not memory related but I'm going to try throwing in another 512 mb to check.

Anyone out there with some ideas? Please help me, this is driving me nuts! Here I build a machine for buddy and it is not running games that great.

I would recomend adding that extra 512 of RAM. I've heard that DOOM3 can consume up to 800MB of memory.

I remember back when I had 512MB of RAM, modern games would stutter and pause whenever I turned a corner. An extra 512 ended such problems entirely.

512mb more of ram and now it is smoking fast. Is there anyway to get better performance in games without getting more ram? Change virtual memory? Initial size of VM is 768 now and range is 768 - 1536.

I can't believe that I did not try that earlier. I spent hours trying to figure this out! I will tell him to buy one more stick.

Very odd but it looks like this mobo does not take 2 dimms of double sided dimms. I wonder what I can do, I got him Corsair 3200 value select. I believe that the dimms are double sided. Does this mean that I can not get same type of ram? Sorry for memory question on this forum.
