I was reading an interesting article at IGN.com the other day that got me thinking-what is the future of games? (Console and PC) I don't mean the graphics or power persay, but the games themselves. I've recently seen a lot of innovation (namely, the Nintendo DS) and it fits into the category that new, innovative things work. So this brings me to the question: Are games just gonna be rehash of what we've been seeing, or will there be any revolutionary things that will wow the general gaming population, other than graphics? Ok, that's not the real question, the question is this:

WHAT THINGS WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN GAMINGS FUTURE? I will be using a lot of references to Grand Theft Auto for the sake of go-where-you-want gameplay.
What enhancements in A.I.? What sort of realism do we want? It seems that the free-roaming-do-what-you-want glory of games like Grand Theft Auto, or RPG's like The Elder Scrolls are becoming a big thing. Some things I want to see in the future of games are as follows:

-A.I. improvement- I want to see characters reacting realistically to what I do to them, or another character, or object in the game, even start conversations with each other, among other things. Put simply, advanced A.I. all around.

-Realistic settings that could affect gameplay. Think Grand Theft Auto here. If you've ever played the series, there's always something that's keeping you from going to another large area of land. be it a blocked bridge, or whatever. Well, there needs to be reasons for that incorporated into gameplay. Example: Say the next Grand Theft Auto comes out for Playstation 3 (which it most likely will). Ok, Let's say, as part of the story line, the game begins in the winter season. Lets' say you can run around the various parts of the city, but you can't access the mountains because you don't have any snow gear yet (boots, heavy coat, etc.). Well, do a couple of jobs to get some money, go to the clothes store and get that snow gear. To make it more realistic, let's say you are not completely banned from going into the snow-filled mountains. Well, incorporate THAT into gameplay as well: You start trecking through the mountains in search of your next drug house hideout takeover. Problem is, you are freezing your ass off. Your performance is distraught due to the fact that you are so cold, and you can barely move. Therefore, your little property overrun would be unsuccessful.

I have so many more ideas that could be incorporated into games, but I'm not gonna share all of them. I want to hear you thoughts on what the games of the future should hold. How games could be better and advanced and not just a bunch of rehash of the same thing. How games could be more real. I know games are supposed to be a getaway from reality, but it's that REALITY that keeps us playing them-the want to do those things we can't. What ideas do you have that could further fulfill your getaway to the "real world"? Please, let me hear your thoughts!

A 8x10 room complete with various weapons, a giant computer controlled treadmill, sensors all over your body, a VR headset, and 20.5 surround sound would be good for starters.

My e-pen0s will be HUGE.

That would be kind of cool but I mean, really, in the foeseeable future. SORRY IF I FAILED TO MENTION THAT FOLKS, GAMES IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE!!!
Capitalized that to get it attention!

i imagine the fire fights in games are gonna be much tougher, and i suspect that our healths will be diminished quite a lot, making our intensity level much higher. that's my biggest complaint of doom 3, the scare factor wears off on account of the fact that you can take a heavy beating and still keep on ticking, plus the save every 5 seconds thing.

Hopefully smarter enemy's will make for better games. Only thing about this is that I can not imagine programming a bot that thinks like a human... As for games in general I hope they just arn't engine tech demo esque, and people go back to making good games with good stories.

I wet my pants when I went to my friend's house and saw him playing Mario 64, but when I saw GC I was like "nice, they touched up the graphics."

Hopefully they'll hold back on graphics, seeing how they can't really make any astounding improvements on it besides better resolution. Nintendo says that they are more concerned about creating better gameplay for their next-gen console than graphics, if they stick to the idea it'll be sweet IMO.

So far I'm hearing a lot about gameplay and better A.I....which is good! Keep it coming!

More immersive play. More interactive enviroments and more choices in how you approach a situation. Farcry was good for this. You could go virtually anywhere on any given island. Sneak in or go in guns blazing.

I'd also like to see more enviromental damage and more gore. Soldier of Fortune II still holds the record for best and most realistic combat damage.

I'd definately like to see better AI and more Co-op play.

Also Larger Poly counts. I'd like to see more depth in the games in the future. It's still a very blocky world when it comes to level detail. Yes they have gotten better but it's still too blocky and unrealistic looking when you get close to objects.

we will one day have smell-cards next to our sound and video cards. experience the horror of war on a new level.
they will require refills from time to time.

We will also see a ton of rehashing, like doom 3 (don't get me wrong, i loved the game, but it wasn't innovative, game-play wise)

I seen a smell tech demo on Electric Playground a few years ago, havent heard nothing else on it though, stupid idea anyway imo.

I'd like to see a "combat" style game where you lead a squad of non-idiots. You know, like you're the "sarge", and you lead your unit into combat. Make it so that you can get promotions and command more men, or stay where you are (your choice). Men get wounded or killed, and replacements are deployed. And make the world as interactive as possible...artillery and aerial bombardment leaves craters (wherever you call in the strikes), or bring down a wall to reveal an enemy tank. Towns you come to might be friendly or enemy, supplies and ammo are concerns. Auxillary units (mortar teams, artillery, SEALS etc.) are sometimes available...and sometimes not. If you come to an area that's particularly tough, you can call in for reinforcements (but if you do it too much you get busted in rank).
Oh, and make it so that it can "evolve"...supply editors to create weapons, levels and characters (within reason...a 6000 round-per-minute machinegun might be nice, but it's not so realistic). Basically make it mod-able enough to simulate everything from the Civil war up through modern combat, and into the future (particle weapons?)
Asking a lot?

Ya well I got 360.1 suround sound. My e-pen0s is bigger then yours 17.5658 times.

But really. I actually want a virtual reality room with my 360 degree sound. Hell why dont you just give me the god damn holo deck from star trek.

Or something like the matrix. "I want guns lots of guns" :D

Edit: I want a game where I can actually "get into the game" I dont want a controller any more. Give me something new and exciting. And a holo deck is every gamers wet dream. Damn I want to play mario 64 on a holo deck. Peach turns me on.

Sorry it was just so tempting.

yeah, the thing about it is...i want an awesome AI that reacts to my every move...you know, enemies that duck where i'm fireing...you know, people who act like people, and not psychotic killers who just waltz right into my line of fire....

i want the AI to make sneak attacks directed at my position, you know, some sort of realistic intelligence...

but i dont mean god like knowledge, this game has to be beatable, not impossible.

oh yes...holo decks would just kick ass...but i think something else might be better in the near future.

we can already control computers using just our thoughts, no its not in public use, but the technology does exist (ie. monkey controling romote control arm with pure thoughts)....imagine being able to just put a special shower head cap on. spend a few hours calibrating it....and voíla!! instead of reading electric signals, generate it through the skull... due to the fact tha the outer layer of the brain is used for a heck of alot of stuff, there is nothing to say that a special transmitter/field generator cant induce sensorium. a very very careful calibration beforehand might help the computer deal with things better.

even in if the computer cant directly generate images through your brain....what about this....
a chip implanted below the skull has biological "wires" grown through embedded and genetically altered stemcells. these wires extend themselves towards the key parts of the brain (hippocampus, occular, etc) this chip has a quantum encription (scientific american has alot of articles on the quantum stuff, but the purpose of this is to prevent hijacking from some evil dude on the outside) and is linked with a specific transmitter/reciever on the outside. the user injects/ ingests a semi hallucinogenic drug. the chip interfaces with the external tranceiver which proceeds to run a program. the chip in the brain, working on a "brain map" begins to activate certain parts of the brain where it "knows" contains a particular smell, sound, touch, sight, etc....the persons mind takes this semi-sporatic information and then with the help of the drug, constructs the environment it believes to be the best representation of the sensorium it recieves.....

the brain wouldnt know whether or not the information is coming from the outside, as the general areas from which they originate are the same..

i'm babbling...

That sounds interesting. You know, a few years back, I was watching some show (on tv-surprise, surprise!) and there was a blind guy who wasn't blind his whole life, so he knew what colors were and such..SO...some researching scientists found a way to connect optical sensors to his eyes/brain to make him see dots and he was amazed to actually see something again. I don't know the progress on this, like if they've advanced it to where blind people people can see using camera type sensors now, but it would be great to be able to hook something like that up to yourself and just be in that world! It would kind of suck to die in the game, because, you know.

Return of the living dead! Well, I was searching though all of my old threads and came across this one! If you haven't read this thread (which not many of you have!), then read my first post and tell me your thoughts....I want to see how things have changed within this year....what has been fulfilled and what hasn't! :)

Well, the last 10 months have shown little innovation in terms of gameplay.

But, as for what I want. An open game, similar to GTA, but in a different environment. Awesome AI. I want them to go about their business whether I'm there or not. Resource hog? Yea. But, ultra realistic. I want them to go on their own missions, and I can stand back and watch in the shadows, or go out and help, or just ignore them. No scripting, just a basic objective structure. I want freedom to do what I want, when I want, how I want. If I want to take out the bad guy by sniping, fine. If I want a rocket launcher, fine. I'd have to do research of where he'd be and when, etc. RPG style work there. But not just go here, do that, go somewhere else. I want it to be action most of the time, very little slow times. Not just complete objective, move on to the next. Have multiple objectives, and you don't have to do them. Just an open game.

You know, game developers have been trying for years now to make games more realistic. At this point in time, I'd rather see the developers say "screw reality" and make a game fun. The problem in doing this, is that the squeaky wheels out there (a lot of them are right here in this forum) would be bitching non stop about how there's no way in hell that whatever could do whatever it is that it's doing in real life, until the developer either patches the "problem", or until a newer game comes out with another "problem".

Yep. I've been piping this for a while now. For instance, from this thread (in response to next gen visual IQ improvements:

As much as a holodeck would rock (if anyone will do it, Miyamoto will - he even mentioned it a couple months back that he wants videogaming to be away from the 4 corners of the TV and to completely surround you... hehe), why does everyone have to focus on graphics (a la Mark Rein). Sure graphics give you the initial "wow" factor, but how much does the visual wow factor keep you playing? I've played plenty of crappy boring games (*cough Doom 3 cough*) that have incredible visuals and atmosphere but fail to suck you into any experience that's worthwhile.

Visual prowess is great, but only if you have substance to back it up (see: RE4). I'm tired of next-gen focus on graphics. The PS3 is designed entirely to be the best visual performer (hence only 1 CPU core, plus 7 SPE's dedicated almost solely to graphics and media processing). With 1 in-order core that has only 512kb cache and static branch prediction, how can we expect the AI, the physics, or anything in between to grow beyond what we're used to? (And don't suggest that the SPE's can process those types of things, because they lack branch prediction and scheduling entirely). IMO with this focus on graphics that almost everyone seems to be taking, our games are just gonna get shittier and shittier, or at the very least, remain stuck in today's level of sophistication - or lack thereof - but look prettier and sharper visually. And you know what? That sucks balls.

And from this Castlevania-related thread, in response to the question "why doesn't Konami make them 2D on the consoles as well, and not just the handhelds?"
StevieP said:
It wouldn't sell, plain and simple. 2D titles on 3D-capable consoles are extremely niche, and putting them on anything other than a handheld is an extreme risk on the part of the publisher. As sad as that is, it's the truth. "Gamers" demand cutting-edge 3D environments (why do you think the X360 even exists, for instance) and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone from the mainstream gamer crowd, outside of us fans in here and other hardcore CV fans, that would accept a 2D game on a console that's capable of realistic 3D environments. Until the day that companies go back to 2D, I'll enjoy its current home, on the DS.

There are plenty of people here on the [H] that aren't self-professed graphic whores who DO appreciate nice visuals, but who don't want them to suffer at the expense of the core gameplay design. I'm all for accurate simulation... in games that need it (Flight Sim, for instance), but I don't need death, blood, gore, realism, darkness, etc. to make me believe the game is fun. In fact, I see the "M" rating as a detraction to core game elements in a certain number of its iterations, simply due to the fact that the developers wanted to be edgy and controversial instead of innovative. Yeah some of us here may bitch and moan about the 'good ol days' of gaming (where cartoony games were just fine, as long as they were fun!) and the fact that almost every game that comes out now is a sequel and/or a re-hash of something else (namely the FPS genre, and the RTS to a certain extent as well... not to mention yearly sports titles). But many of us here want it to stop - and that's why you see threads like this, and another recent one posted, of people with ideas. Great ideas. Let's hope that one day someone listens :)

as American Heritage dictionary, it says: game is "an activity providing entertainment or amusement"
that's it. when playing game, what do you feel? In action games, you're making yourshelf stress because you have to aware everything around. in RPG, the same, you try to rescure princess... you also hear someone died because of playing game. and that's not an amusement at all, is it right?
at the early day, games brought gamers entertainment an amusement purely. but now, it socially changes its trend. AI and graphics in games get much improved, gameplay also. I try to find the good face and bad face of playing game.surely that good face is not much as bad one.

I think Sports MMOs will become big. Mark my words...

UBB didn't succeed but I think in the future these games will.

Yeah you know this sounds exactly like that game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. shadow of chernobyl that is supposed to be coming around sometime whenever.

Once higher-end hardware and broadband are more standard I'd imagine that MMO/FPS hybrids will be popular as well.

I've never heard of a sports MMO, but I could see something like that being cool...

Say it is an NFL sim... you create your character as whatever position you want, maybe 'level up' though training exercises/games similar to the stuff on Madden, and then when you are playing in a game, all of the players are actually real people just controlling that one character?

The only problem I could see is that everyone would want to be WR, RBs, or QBs, with maybe a CB or Safety here and there. Whose going to want to play a lineman?
