We see a lot of negative press about gaming in general nowadays, so whenever I see a piece that actually highlights a positive, like improving your eyesight, I’m all over it. Apparently the study says this effect is only from fast paced action games, so I guess you’ll just have to suck it up when the new Halo arrives. ;)

Playing "Gears of War," "Lost Planet," "Halo" and other action video games that involve firing guns can improve your eyesight, new research claims.

Funny story. I have always sucked at darts and recently in the last couple of months have also been playing counter strike 1.6 a bunch as I bought the game. 2 nights ago I get challenged to a game of cricket with the darts at the corner bar and proceed to win all my games by a long margin. Surprised the heck out of me that my darts went where I wanted them.

glad to see more positive gaming studies results.. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I've been annoyed with all the negativity in miedias surrounding video games. Unfortunaltely this kind of news don't make it to Poland

I really don't think this applies to people who game on laptops or even desktops. Most computer users have their monitors too close to have any benefit what so ever. With screens getting larger (ie: 30") and people only sitting a feet or two back, the line of sight crosses what would be considered "optimum" and thus a strain is placed on the eyes, because, essentially, you're looking at something slightly cross-eyed. My optometrist and I just had a conversation about this last week, and I must say, even though she games (yes, SHE), she advised me to limit my gaming/computer usage to no more than 2-3 hours at a time. Any more and eye strain occurs, causing headaches and whatnot.

i love studies that point out the obvious.

well of course, video games, and there visual motion/pattern recognition are going to be like training for your mind.

next studies will be saying other obvious things.

-looking at (currently) high quality cgi will magically give you the ability to see flaws in lower quailty previously real looking cgi.

-staring at one depth for hours at a time playing 3d games, and using their depth perception clues, will eventually cause your eyes' reflexes to "forget" how to focus really far away. but will also give you the ability to determine depth and content of whta you are seeing with actual worse eyesight.

-and shorter people have better game reflexes cause of their shorter arms.

. . . .

If playing cs improved your aim in darts... that means that it can also improve your aim with guns. Therefore making you a trained killer... Jack Thompson was right all along! ;)

Gaming also produces pear shaped people.

No pron does

and yes, this does apply to people on laptops and desktops, you still need to work on your reaction time and other senses if the screen is 2ft away or 50f.

"In related news ,studies have shown that owning a hardcore pc helps to achieve a longer lasting, more satisfying erection."

Reaction time and ability to recognize objects, yes. Actually vision, no.

Hmm, this is a very interesting one, you wouldn't really expect games help improve your eye sight

*EDIT* I should start playing battlefield 2 and battlefield 2142 and cut down the flying time in Flight Simulator x. :/ Today is the last day of Spring break for me, maybe ill probibly only get 1hour to 2hour of game time each day next week. Now the coming up holiday is summer!! Woot woot.

It sounds like the arthor is confusing perception with vision. For example, an uncle of mine once pointed out a heron fishing in a small stream in the woods. I had to look for a little while before I ever saw it, due to its coloring, stillness, and the backbround. I could spot that heron in a second today, because I have learned what to look for, even though my vision is inferior to what it was then.
