Im having a problem when I try to play games. It will just freeze and hang there randomly for about 5 seconds and then it will ;unfreeze. and most of the time it doesnt crash completely Some games do it more than others and the only games I have gotten to work with no problems are warcraft 3 and quake 3.
I tried replacing ram, hard drive, motherboard, power supply, sound card, and processor.
I have the latest video card drivers 61.77
any ideas?

The other games I have tried are
Farcry
Warhammer Dawn of War 40k
Rome Total War
Doom 3
Planetside
Everquest

My guess is it's the video card or some sort of software problem. I'm guessing the hard drive swap resulted in a reformat, so aside from trying different drivers I don't know what to tell you other than make sure your graphics card has decent cooling & think about swapping that out.

I had problems with games going "nuts" with my Gainward 5900. Funny thing is it stopped when I installed a BFG 6800GT. I forget what drivers I'm running, and I'm in Linux right now so I can't look. Sometimes it'd freeze, Far Cry would get corrupted graphics & run really slow. KOTOR would just run really slow. Some games never had a problem though- Doom 3 and UT2k4 always ran just fine. My machine never actually crashed though. I just exited the game (or switched back to windows & killed it), then restarted the game. The problem was also resolution dependant. The higher res/AA/AF settings I used the more it would happen- but I could run a 4xAA/8xAF 1600x1200 slideshow in Doom 3 or UT2k4 with no ill effects other than the obvious shit performance.

I am having a similar issue right now, maybe if you check yours is doing something similar. For some odd reason my drivers will only recog. 8MB of my 128MB of vram. If I reinstall drivers, restart, and let the system run the games work and win recog. all my ram. I am gonna try a reformat. It is probably different for you but hey it doesn't hurt to check.

well its not overheating cpu temp is 29 c and i think my computer temp is like 47 c avg. I did the drivers off the cd and it was hanging, I went to the website and got the 61.77 drivers and it still is hanging so I dont think its the drivers. It took me 2 weeks to get a working OS installation that you could do windows updates on so Im not sure if I want to reinstall windows yet.

btw where would I go to see how much vram its seeing?

EDIT: Also one day I played everquest close to 2 hours and it never started hanging once, turned it on another time and it would do it about once every 30 seconds, It has never hung once on warcraft 3 and I played it 13 hours in a row one night. Planetside, matrix online, and farcry( which i think most 6800's have a problem with) are just unplayable

right click the desktop, properties, settings, advanceded, adapter. Yeah like I said it may not be it, especially since windows wouldn't even install right. What was it doing every time it didn't work on a fresh reformat and install? Maybe it's not your video card at all.

I loaded fail-safe defaults in my bios and ran dawn of war for about 45 min with no hangs at all, not sure if its completely fixed but doing good so far, wouldnt hurt to try that

checked vram says 256 mb, Ive had many people help me out with it and they said its had the weirdest problems they had ever seen. Couldnt use usb with my motherboard, windows was always corrupted on my old hard drive, If i installed drivers or windows updates my OS crashed, it would randomly stop seeing my video card drivers and switch to 4 bit colors, old ram use to give me BSOD memory dump errors and I couldnt even use a mouse for a while, also use to randomly restart Thats why I had to replace almost everything in my computer to finally get it working.

What bout the system ram? Could have an error near the end of one of the modules. Test the ram and see how it goes.

EDIT: Just reread the post- you said you tried the ram. My bad.

I ran memtest on my first two sticks of ram and came up with 593 errors I replaced them and that fixed some of my issues
