Gamers Are Lazy And Don't Want To Exercise

How do you find time for work and family/social life? I've given up gaming nearly cold turkey and lost a lot of weight along with it. I usually only have time to exercise about an hour a day. Wife and work takes up the rest.

I'll probably get ripped. But. For cardio I ride my stationary bike and throw a gamepad controlled game on. Two birds one stone. Plus my fiancée can't complain about me gaming if I'm exercising. I don't do as much weight training anymore (maybe once or twice a week), so that is the only time I have to dedicate an hour or two strictly to lifting/exercise.

Yet another example of why no matter how hard they try, VR is just never going to be more than a Niche Appeal. It isn't fun after 30 minutes to an hour no matter what that persons physical condition is. I see this and think "Yea it would be cool once, but I am not about to do this after a long day".

I disagree completely. If VR were like Star Trek and you physically were totally immersed in a room and couldn't tell that it wasn't reality... or your mind was jacked in.. Totally would do it.

People play sports after working all day.. people work out after working all day.

I'm not looking to body build. I do mostly circuits. I'm primarily in it for the health benefits, not to turn myself into Ahnold :p

Yes of course. That logic is sound. I tell people the same thing when they talk about college "just be careful because you might wake up one day and find yourself with a phd and a career in academia" because those kinds of things can just sneak up on you.

I kind of want one of these, but I tend to multi-task while I game and I don't know how I would do that with this. $500 is a surprisingly good price for this, but I think with the right marketing they could snag 1/20th of the Rift's future production sales. Assuming a 30% return on each sale, they would need to 14-15000 to hit the break even / profit mark. Oculus is projected to sell over 50,000 development kits (gen 2), which means they would need to sell roughly one these walkers to 1/3rd of the developers to break even before final production Rifts comes out. Based on how cheap these are I can easily see 1 out of 3 developers/ (idiots who buy dev kits) buying these when they get a Rift. Personally, if I had the investment money, I could easily see doubling my investment on this. They are right, most people will play this for an hour then give up. But, that is also how gym memberships work, I don't know how well this company will last after the initial sales, but look at the the Wii Fit. They made a fortune off those sets and how many were used after the first week-month?

Thank you for the suggestions!

My biggest problem right now is that now that I'm working out I am hungry ALL THE EFFING TIME. I could eat a horse, nay 5 in a day. it's a vicious cycle, requiring that I spend more time in the gym :p
I also made a mistake. I realized you have 3 off days. So that evens it out a bit. All the suggestions I gave are 6 days/week. But if you are hungry like that, its a good thing. You have a healthy metabolism and just as long as you eat something every 2-3 hours, you'll keep the fat burning due to a more balanced blood/sugar level.

Fair enough, but investors are usually looking to expend effort on safe, large returns.
Yes and I wanted to piggyback off of this and mention that a lot of ideas are slammed by the Sharks but that doesn't necessarily mean you don't have a good product. It just means that for them, the Sharks to get involved they need a nice return on it for them to bother with it.

The #1 problem for me when it comes to losing weight is that exercise is boring. I don't like sports, and I hate being in a gym. For the moment I jog to exercise, and it sucks with this winter weather.

Get into bike riding. It's low impact and really gets the heart rate up. It's also a great sport if you like shopping and buying hobby related gear. There is all kinds of specialized clothing and gear to buy. Couple months ago I picked up a Pearl Izumi jacket for $200, was originally $400. Because of the jacket I ride in 20 degree F weather. Without it I'd sit on my ass after work instead.

Right now I'm mostly road biking but once I get some hydration gear over Christmas I'll hit some of the offroad trails again.

Haha, I know what you mean. My lower back every now and then gets sore from the type of exercises that you do.

It's not so much sore as I have degenerative back disease, or condition, or something. I forget. All I know is that some of my lower discs have less cartilage between than the other discs thus I have a higher risk of pinching nerves and stuff. One time the ambulance had to literally pick my fat ass off my living room floor and take me to the ER. That was fun. That was when I was 300 pounds.

This really seems more like one of those neat things you try at arcade type environment as once in a while experience, nothing that hardly anyone would use regularly at home. A few people might buy it thinking the would, but after a month it would be packed in a closet.

I think most anyone trying to compete with their friends online would immediately quit using it because someone with a mouse/KB sitting at desk would slaughter them as they actually needed to run to move fast. And do weird acrobatics to circle strafe.

It's a novelty device that wouldn't thrive much in real homes.

I'm convinced the oculus rift has the potential to do amazing things.

This isn't one of them.

Porn. That would sell millions of these. And not only to the single guy in his Mom's basement. Any fantasy you wanted, all available for download.

Also - Walking through history. Want to walk through the Titanic? Sure. Walk on the Moon? Yes. Space Shuttle? Ok. Aside from games, there is so much other stuff that could be done. And I'd love every bit of it.

I personally talked to each one of these guys at Quakecon when they had it there this year.
I even spent time in the unit itself. I'll tell you one thing, it's immersive as all hell!
Now if they implemented some sort of electric shock system or something, it would intensify the experience as well.
You don't need special shoes, and it just works in some strange fashion.
There were people lined up to use it for hours on end.

Now, you need the Ocular Rift for it to work properly, there's extensive installation procedures, and it's rather bulky in person.
While it's a neat product, I am not sure it's going to fly and will end up in the back of SKYMALL for some rich guy to buy for his son.

Think of it as less of a face-palm smh and more of an amusing smh. If you want further detail, I'll happily pm you and not waste this thread's real estate for it.

waste the real estate? It's already devolved from the mechanics of the invention and turned into a work out thread. Can't exactly say it's still in a pristine form.

Touche. But this is a natural evolution. Just roll with it! :D

Oh my god... I would love if it allowed you to have le secks with some female/robot/alien octopus of your choosing. And level 2 is your journey as the sperm to the egg or her/it's throat to her/it's stomach. Hmmm. I'm gonna patent this idea. Who down to help me develop this?

Well, there is that.... I was thinking more of celebrities, porn stars, etc.. I guess furries, too, if you're into that stuff.... Or the tentacle stuff. It's big in Japan.

Exactly. I'm not personally into it but if I want to make money with my "idea" I should try to include as wide a market as possible. Asians are most likely going to be the first in line for such things anyway. :D

Its really too bad that stereotype still exists with consoles selling millions and game sales topping film sales by huge margins. By saying gamers are fat and lazy, they're basically saying the developed world is fat and lazy, which just isn't true, unless your an American, lol.

I hate exercise but with that said, I'm fit and sometimes subject myself to the hatred of exercise and i'm out in the woods nearly every weekend looking for bambi.

I am on the computer working and gaming most of the day and I'm not even remotely overweight. The only way to gain weight is too eat more calories than you use... so eat less when gaming and eat more when active. Exercise when you can but it's nowhere near required to maintain weight, although it has other benefits.

For an hour until you were too exhausted to do more. Then suddenly the guy with a controller or mouse and keyboard is having way more fun. Again, not discounting the "Cool" factor. Just saying on the long term it isn't viable. Now for those that only play games an hour here or there, sure it could have appeal. Those of us who sit down for 3+ hours at a pop, not a chance. We can debate the merits of Star Trek holo decks in 30+ years if they are even out at that point.

People play sports after working all day.. people work out after working all day.

I know lots of people who play weekend sports. I know much fewer who participate in this kind of activity after a full work day. I know Very few who do any of those activities more than an hour and even fewer still who play video games. I am one of the ones who enjoys both video games and working out in the gym, however I fully recognize how extremely rare I am. Those two passions rarely coexist in one person.

Is there a market for this? Sure, places like Dave and Busters and other amusement oriented places will make a killing with things like this. This type of device is PERFECT for those types of environments. Mass market appeal? Not even close.

You're right, the stereotype does suck. Just because you game, doesn't have to mean you're fat, and doesn't mean that you don't exercise.

But at the same time, does that mean you want to blow a few hundred dollars eating up space in your living room so you can exercise while playing a game?

The bulk of the complaints by the "sharks" are legit, and don't revolve around the stereotypes. The retail space requirement is large, and costs money. The overall total cost for the rift, the omni, possibly the shoes, and then any other peripherals you might need becomes pretty high for something that is a niche item in the game industry. Then you've got to get past the idea that even the gamers with the most active lifestyles still want to just comfortably lounge around for a bit.

This thing belongs in arcades, maybe amusement parks. Stuff like Dave & Buster's or whatever your local equivalent is. Maybe with some slippers that fit over normal shoes. Video game related companies have been trying to sell peripherals as basic as a lightgun for decades and have failed repeatedly, there's just no way this would work as a retail item meant for the home.

LOL, looks like Dekoth-E- pretty much posted the exact same thing I did regarding markets where the omni makes sense, while I was distracted and went AFK for a sec.

- Oculus rift controls your aim point, NOT your gun placement.
not true

I was not surprised nobody thought this was a good investment. Dude looked like he was gonna break down and cry... That being said I hope they are successful and someone develops a killer app.

I'm a "Gamer" as they say and I'm not fat nor lazy. But I also don't exercise because what I deal with on some days is an exercise on its own.

Ditto

I game on a lot of my free time so I guess I'm a "gamer" but I am also a team lead for a tool distributor which means that I personally move anywhere from 30000-70000lbs a week depending on the season. I simply don't have the energy or the desire to work out outside of the thrashing I take at work.

Gamers Are Lazy And Don't Want To Exercise
You don't say?!

I'm a gamer. I'll have to remember this while I'm at the gym on my way home from work this morning :)

Honestly though, this can apply to a fair chunk of gamer friends I have.

I am also at the gym quite a bit, a gym rat you might say. I do not disagree with Mark Cuban though, most gamers do not want to workout while gaming specifically. A gaming session for me is a relaxing break when I get some time, it shouldn't be an extra workout.

I however do not think I am in the norm, I think most gamers do not work out for the most part. As a high school coach I can also attest that most athletes do not have time to game.

This type of virtual reality interaction while it will be obviously more immersive it will not be as fast or competitive as traditional control methods so I doubt will be used by those interested in competitive online play.

Personally I'd prefer to use just the occulus and not even have head tracking enabled.....the all surrounding FOV and 3D would be more than adequate for my needs.

I'm neither fat or lazy having cycled between 20 - 40 miles a day most days of the week for almost 25 years.....but at 50+ years of age I now take things easier....a lot easier.

When I want to relax I may play some video games. When I can do that you better believe that I want to exert myself as little as possible.

I too go to the gym often. I prefer to keep the two activities separate so I give my current activity my undivided attention.

Shocking thread title btw. A similar thread could be titled, "This just in: Fat people like fast food!"

It is a niche market. The market is there, and I'm definitely getting something like that once VR takes off. Gym sucks. I did it 5 days a week with diverse sports, lost 80 pounds, want to exercise more but I just can't do something that doesn't require any kind of intellectual attention whatsoever anymore. Now I keep to sports because they are involving. If I can do 1-2h of fencing or badminton, so I can surely do a few FPS maps runnning around like fucking Rambo and having a blast with rushes of adrenaline. I don't know why people seem to think it is an exclusive choice. It is not. It is an OPTION. You're tired? Sit back at the keyboard between respawns feeling content that you've done your daily exercise while doing something productive.

Gamers aren't lazy; anyone who think so hasn't taken to the think and are only making fools of themselves. PEOPLE are lazy. Gamers not more so than anyone else. This thing will appeal to a lot of people; they are only right in saying the guys might be overestimating their market. It IS a niche, just like surround gaming is, and one that, if I'm not mistaken, is already starting to have competition. But sell it will.

Hell if they're smart about it they could probably work their way into gyms or disability centers or some other kind of markets too.

Unlike all the extreme bodybuilders in this thread with -3% bodyfat, I'm about 20lbs overweight. But, I like exercise and do it somewhat regularly (2-3x a week).

Interesting.

I have more hours than god logged in Steam games.

I also spend 10 hours in the gym every week, have a very low body fat percentage and can bench about 200lb.

that being said, I've always hated the term Gamer. I am a person who enjoys many things, among them games. My playing games doesn't define me, thus I shun the term. :p

That being said, I probably would never choose to get my exercise from some sort of game machine, so I wouldn't be a target audience for this thing anyway...

Hehehe ... yeah id like to see any of those critics come climbing with me... I could use a good laugh.

I think the concept is good.... but I don't have the kind of space for a setup like that, or frankly the desire to exercise while gaming. I climb rocks for fun, I game for fun...
