Is it possible to have a game such as CSS play audio through the speakers while having Ventrilo play through my headset?

Yes, you need two sound card though... ventrilo lets you select the output.. while CS:S use the default sound card....

Yes i do that. use your 2nd sound card if you have one, and put ventrillo's outputs and whatnot on the 2nd soundcard, and use your default soundcard for CSS.

go pick up the $20 Soundblaster live from walmart :)

Interesting.

But say I want CS:S voice sounds to play through my headset, while still having actual sound effects play through the speakers. Would that be possible?

You can also use a USB headset. It will let you treat it like a second soundcard.

that works.

the sorce engine wont allow you to output to two devices (may be incorrect) but i use Ventrilo through a headset. i found the usb dac that came with my minidisc player, worked perfect.

I have an XFI Xtreme Gamer and onboard Realtek AC97 based sound. I have my mic in the Realtek and that works fine, and the headphones and digital out to my amp plugged into the Xfi card, they work fine.

However, in Vista I see that the applications that get launched come up under the creative speaker output and i can get NOTHING to output on the Realtek speaker output. Any ideas? I was wondering about this 'allow applications to take exclusive control' option.

I haven't tried Ventrillo to change the output so I'll give that a try, but the clans/guild I play with dont tend to use it :(

I have found a solution. I have registered the program because it works so well. It is called IndieVolume and it allows you to add your applications and switch the output between sound devices. It lists my SPDIF out on the Xfi, Spkrs Xfi and Speakers Realtek. There is a 7 day trial available on the authors site and its $24 or so if you register it (lifetime updates).

The only thing I noticed which is a little annoying is that there is a little lag when an audio source starts when its running. I.e. I start an MP3 file playing and get the output about 2 seconds later. Doesn't matter when the sound is continuous, I'm just happy I have a way of using the speakers and the headset together.

You just need two different sound devices, which can include USB sound devices.

I have the XBOX360 wireless headset (with gaming receiver for windows, to use the 360 wireless devices on windows) and used to have onboard audio but now have the Bose Companion 5 speakers which show up as USB audio.

So you just keep your primary audio device as whatever your speakers are plugged into and in Ventrilo/TS or whatever you can select the voicecom devices totally separately. Any USB audio devices, including the XBOX360 wireless headset microphone and the earpiece speaker, all show up as different sound devices in Vent.

So game sounds through your speakers and voicecom totally separately through the headset. Any USB headset with mic+speaker in it should do.
