Hey guys,

I got a 5.1 system with a YAMAHA RX-v573. audio is coming from gpu to the reciever by hdmi.

(dvi to screen for display)

I have some issues with sound, im not exactly sure why.

In assassins creed 3 the voices were VERY soft/low in some cases and normal in others, I beat the game with it, but it was REALLY annoying.

I just got saints row 4 and its even more annoying here, one second I can barely hear the characters, the next its WAYY too lloud.

I saw that when its too soft the center is the only one doing the voice, when its too loud its all 5 speakers at once.

it really turned me off from playing the game, im not sure what to do.

is there any fix?

Have you installed your HDMI audio drivers, the latest versions from the manufacturer? If you use windows default drivers all bets are off.

Sounds like you are sending 5.1/7.1 from the PC and your centre channel isnt working, to compensate you have turned up the other speakers too loud.

Looks like this is a common problem with Assassin's Creed.

Have you done a speaker test in the Windows playback devices area? If all speakers work equally from there then AC3 is broken. Just doing a search on Google, it looks like this is a common problem across all platforms, even consoles.

I have done windows test and it works fine.

I have the latest HDMI audio drivers (nvidia)

brand video card is reference galaxy GTX 780.

it only happens in SOME games I think.

I know that I used an older, different brand receiver and it had something in settings called Voice or something related to voice that I had to turn on in order to hear voices properly with a ps3, but this yamaha doesn't seem to have a setting like that.

I really like 5.1 but its driving me crazy!

Voices usually play through center channel. But some games are buggy with hdmi audio. Best is not to use it, there are other options available.

I would blame ubisoft and call it a day. Have you tried BF3? It has about the best gaming sound going atm. Or Metro Last Light.

The best solution is if the game has issues in 5.1, just switch to stereo.

I only have HDMI, I had a soundcard but this receiver doesn't have the analog connections like my old receiver did, so I removed the soundcard completely.

and its not just ubisoft, I just installed and tried saints row 4, its even worse there.

and I don't want to use stereo... =/

Your windows sound setting is at 5.1 right?

Might try setting all speakers to full range.

I feel ya. Stereo sucks in games.

I believe that Skyrim also had a similar issue but was eventually fixed. Poor implementation of the audio engine. It is half-assed programming that prevents the game from properly detecting the speaker configuration resulting in cases like these.

I thought it was obvious, it's a game issue. The fix is for the game to be patched.

The only "fix" or workaround on your side is to use stereo, which you already stated you don't want to do.

Using analog surround output might fix it but other than that you're screwed.

What about using DTS Connect or Dolby Digital Live to encode your sound to a 5.1 format that your reciever could read via toshlink/optical?

Personally what i do with my setup, Soundcard --> Amp -- > Speakers, i send it via 3x 3.5 mini stereo plug to RCA to connect my 6 channles to my Emotiva UPA-5, this is the only other route that i see viable but the YAMAHA RX-v573 dont have passive inns, so the dts connect and ddl seems like better options for your situation.
