I recently installed an MSI R9 280x and things have been working great until I tried running and oldie (but a goodie) Assassin's Creed 2. The game has two problems with this new card: 1) the camera angle rapidly switches about 20-30 times per second, making playability impossible and 2) the GPU gets to about 95 C and sometimes hotter, which then shuts down the computer. Adjusting graphics settings including VSync does nothing. I believe these 2 problems are strongly correlated.

I used Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) when I threw in the newer card, tried reinstalling the drivers. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling AC2. Other games, older and newer, run perfectly fine, no temp issues. Furmark doesn't get above 80 C. Any suggestions?

I had a problem with my new MSI 280x, while moving / installing it, if you put pressure on the heatsink on 1 side, it would move the heatsink enough, to break contact with the gpu / heat paste, and eventually, cause the issue you were describing, I would remove the heatsink, apply new thermal paste, also check both fans are actually spinning.
 
Did as you suggested: Problems are gone. The putz who put on the thermal paste put on way too much, with paste off of the die and onto transistors. It was awful. I cleaned it up real well and applied some IC Diamond paste.

Also, one fan was not spinning, while the other spun slowly. I followed some guides online and added some mineral oil to the fans and they work good as new. Idles at 32°C (not bad for AMD) and Furmark never above 82°C. None of my games with extreme graphics settings gets above 71°C. Thanks for the suggestions.
