OK all,

Here are my current spec's.


Q9550
8GB ram
Six 128GB SSD ( sata II ) in Raid 0 ( i have three more )
GTX 680 Classified, GTX 285 Physics.
PC Power and Cooling 950
ViewSonic G22 CRT

I just pulled the trigger on the GTX 680.

and I want to look at a CPU / Motherboard / Ram upgrade.

My budget is $300-$400.
I was thinking a 2500k, and board, with 8-16 GB ram. I'll add more ram to run VMware workstation later, since I am VMware guy.

The challenge is going to be finding a board that has six - eight ssd support.
I also have a intel x520-da2 10GB/1GB adapter I want to put in it.
And Sli support would be nice.

1. Gaming, FPS, RPG, 75% of the time, VMware workstation 20% of the time, PS 5% of the time.
2. USA, MN, St. Cloud
3. nope, not enough time to be had trouble shooting.
4. Between now and a week after xmiss or so
5. Raid, SLI, Sata 6, the others are optional.
6. I have a PC Power and Cooling 950
7. I could do 6 for games, and 1 or 2 for OS, 6 SSD would be nice... I have about 500gb in steam games.

Why that CPU over a 2500k?

You're not overclocking so no reason for you to get a K series CPU. Especially if the K series costs more. The Core i5 3470 will perform the same as that Core i5 2500K despite the clock difference since the Ivy Bridge i5 3470 performs 3% to 5% faster clock for clock as the Sandy Bridge 2500K.
 
I ended up ordering the following.

Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz LGA 1155 Processor
Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Z77 ATX Intel Motherboard
2X Vengeance Series 8GB DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) CL9 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit (Two 4GB Memory Modules)
Antec Kuhler H2O 620 Water Cooler

I plan on building it tonight.
 
Wouldn't have gone with that AsRock. Why did you go with the 3570K? Are you planning on overclocking now?
 
But... you spent a bunch of gas to get there too?

True, but I hit the local sports store ( cabela's ) for my old man, and picked up a pole, line and some lures. Musky gear.

Thus, allowing me to justify the gas. :0)

I have built the system. Attached are some pictures.





I put the GTX 285 in for now.

I have six SSD in raid 0, and a SSD that I am booting off of.
Here are my Raid 0 performance results.


I Ran the CPU clocked at 4.4 GHZ over night, then decided to push it to 4.6 GHZ.
Here is what is it running at as we speak.


Thoughts? Should I try to get a better OC??

Wouldn't have went with AsRock either for the record.
 
I hit 5Ghz stable on my 2500k, but it requires pushing my voltage a bit. Also, the real world performance gain was fairly minimal over keeping it at 4.5 at almost stock voltage so I dropped it back down to 4.5.
 
Ok, so what's next in this rig? A ssd performance upgrade? A raid card? Another video card? Better cooling , aka more fans?

Been overclocking since my 2nd rig, a p III celeron 333; habit!

My last rig didn't oc well. So I've kinda had the itch .

What do you mean "what's next"? Aren't you happy with the results of your recent upgrade?
 
Well, I'm going to have xmiss money.... Otherwise my wife will just spend it, ha!
 
Not much you can do to the PC actually to get a noticeable increase in performance.
 
Rocking a 110 hz 22" CRT , thoughts?

And a generic keyboard, basic headphones.
 
Not sure why you're asking us; you don't appear to listen to advise very well.
