OK... so I'm relatively new to PC gaming. I've been a console gamer on nearly every gaming console since the original Nintendo, but just recently built a system capable of playing newer PC games on medium to high settings. I just got done playing F.E.A.R. and F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point and fell in love with them. I'm looking for a decent FPS in the same vein as these. I've played Rainbow Six: Vegas and Half-Life 2, Episode One. Of the two, I prefer R6V. Any suggestions. With PC games as expensive as their console counterparts, I don't want to do too much experimenting without being reasonably sure that the games are decent. Thanks for your help, ya'll.

Some of my favorites to play are all the different Half-Life and Half-Life 2 mods out there. Not only are there the obvious CS:S and such, but a whole slew of great playing, community ones as well.

Here is a list of HL mods, while here is a list of HL2 ones.

There are also Wikipedia articles here and here.

Edit- Also, I think your sig is a little longer than the max.

Thief 3, Farcry, Doom3, Quake4, Prey, Condemned: criminal origins.... uh... BF2 (shudder) -- these all have demos of course so start downloading.

like he said download the demos, that helps a lot. (since you cant rent pc games, the demos are a lifesaver, cause if you dont like the demo your not gonnna like the game, but if its fun, your gonna like the game 95% of the time.

fileshack.com sign up for a free account and download as many as you can. its one of the better places to get demos from.

Prey demo is great, eventually ill get the game, You also might Like Call of DUty and Brothers in Arms. GRAW is also of mention but tough. UT 2004 is old , but cheap and still a good game. Any of the TRibes games are good, but old. you can find the first 2 for free sometimes and the 3rd for cheap as well. Return to Castle Wolfenstein as well. Red Faction is good for single player, and multiplayer was great, but not sure how many people still play it. BF2 is mixed, it has some awesome things in it, and some not so good things. Jedi Knight outcast is pretty good to, and the battlefront games are only good in multiplayer. And Oblivion is a excellent RPG/FPS game.

There is many other great ones out there. but some are showing some age.

All those mentioned are good, but play HL1 and HL2 before you play Episode 1, you won't get as good an experience without playing them. I like the Source engine, so I recommend the HL series, CSS, Day of Defeat: Source, all of the mods are also good. Company of Heroes is a good one that nobody has mentioned yet. Also get all of the Battlefield series (well, at least 2 and 2142). Just download a bunch of demos and see what you like.

prey collecters edition is $20 @ best buy
doom 3 is $20 @ best buy
quake 4 is $20 @ best buy (i was able to get it for $15 two weeks ago)
farcry is $20 @ comp usa
GRAW is $20 @ best buy
condemned: criminal origins is $20 @ Best Buy
all the unreal tournament games in 1 box for $30 at most stores
steam has some good deals on half life and it's mods

these games are pretty cheap, you might just want to buy them despite not liking a demo

My suggestions are as follows:

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - There's not much to say about it, just browse this forum and you'll find plenty of reasons to try it :)

Prey - Definitely try this one, especially in Multiplayer. It's very cool.

Company of Heroes - Probably the best RTS out there, with amazing graphics and a new "feel" to the worned out genre of RTS's.

Thanks for all the great info guys. I was interested in BF2142, but heard it was pretty buggy. I wasn't aware of the signature length. That thing is a beast. I'll hack my wife's computer off to trim her down a bit. Hehe. Thanks again!

well i have it and it doesn't seem to be buggy at all...

Painkiller and Serious Sam if you want some mindless slaughter. Second the FarCry suggestion--that one was a lot of fun.

Older but I feel still worthy. No One Lives Forever 1 and 2. Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy
