Game Idea

I wasn't sure exactly where to post this but since it has to do with folding@home I placed it here. If my assumption was incorrect please move this thread to a more appropriate location. Thanks :)

Okay now onto the idea, Folding@home gives you PPU and this PPU get accumulated into a total score. That score is well it's just a number really, but people have in the past conducted races with these scores. That's cool and all, but I was thinking what if we could use this score in a full out game something like a turn based empire building game where the only way to introduce money into the games economy is via folding. The f@h score would basically be money and the primary way of earning money would be for the users to fold.

Like any good empire building game there would be wars between empires to "earn" money by defeating the other empire as well as being able to earn money by trading with other empires etc etc but the primary idea would be to A. use the f@h score as money and base the games economy off of it and B. promote f@h and give idk more incentive to fold I suppose. I just think it'd be fun to use the score in a game. So what do you guys think? Is it a terrible idea or a completely dreadful idea?

interesting concept.. not sure how you could get it to work though..

Could modify some PHP/MySQL turn-based game, and make it use the daily PPD from Hardfolding stats to give you the hourly money or whatever.

LOL Kendrak. I'm sure it wouldn't be too awful hard. Balance would be the issue tho, Atlas and Tiger would rule the world. Ok, sry, but Tiger would be Atlas' bitch but thats just cuz that guy has some serious fuckin cash flow, no other way to describe that. Balance would be the problem. Teams would form, like alliances I guess you could say, and they would allign themselves with their folding team, so it would basicly be a brawl version of EOC lol. I used to play a text based game kinda like this, every day you got X money and the game reset every 60 days. If they did something like that for folding I guess it could work, just don't do a reset every 60 days, a game on that large of a scale would get annoying reseting so often

Balance
Either we can import the full score of the players upon joining or we can have them start with nothing and have them earn it from there therefore allowing all players to start on an even playing field. The only problem with that is that many people have already spent a lot of time and money into folding and could very well be upset when they find out they don’t start with their massively high score. Other than that I’m not entirely sure how to balance the gameplay (the idea is still fairly new)

Game Resets
It could be a persistent game in which the game never resets, the drawback to this is if one clan or individual starts dominating and new players don’t really have a chance at competing making the game almost pointless to play. If we were to reset every year or so we could then have an exciting race to the top every year but then some folks might be upset than they spent so much effort trying to make it to the top that they would stop competing in further seasons. Really it’d come down to the players themselves, if there is interest in resetting then it could be an option if not then the game would most likely be persistent.

The Game itself (programming wise)
I will try making the game myself but alas my programming skills are pretty much nonexistent. As of right now (unless I find a better open source script) the game will probably be based off of QM Promisance http://sourceforge.net/projects/qmpromisance/ It has just about every feature I’d like the game to have, you can check out a demo of it at http://www.qmtpro.com/
When I fail at making the game work (and it’s most likely to happen) I’m willing to pay a programmer to do the dirty work. Does anyone know where I could find a decent php/mysql programmer and roughly how much it would cost to modify the above game to use f@h scores? Just a rough estimate so I know I’m not getting over my head and selling my car to pay for a script.

Keep in mind the folding@home stats are "Stats update in progress" fairly often, making scores inaccessible. *This may well be scheduled and predictable, and thus easy to avoid. I just notice it seems to be frequent.*

I dig the idea, but in practice it sounds like a nightmare for the people running it.

That shouldn't be too difficult, you can download a list of scores, user names, etc from here http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Stats it updates once every hour. Now if we could import that document into a mysql table we could use that for referencing and update the table once an hour to get the latest information. All in all it shouldn't be too bad .. hopefully

If I didn't have 5 million things going on, and half started projects I would totally get on board with this.

Here is one of my many half started projects, a game developed in XNA (Windows only): http://hyperspaceproject.com

Would be pretty easy to have it pull in and chunk scores, Already have a Network Framework, although it never got tested on a mass scale. Could be an interesting idea to consider.

If you did do something like this, you should make it only use points earned for the [H]orde... that way others cant play unless they help lol

Interesting concept. Can't comment much about this until something more solid emerges but what do you have in mind as far as the genre of game is concerned? There are many possibilities if we look at empire building games already existing. They can assume a variety of different styles. I understand the idea of using folding points for the resource aspect of the game, but not entirely sure how or where this would be played?

Interesting idea :) I develop games for a living and I actually find this concept intriguing. It would indeed require a lot of balancing to keep it a fun game for everyone. I'll be watching this thread at any rate :D
