Got my Galaxy 470 GC yesterday from Tiger, purchased based on the glowing reviews of its improved cooling and acoustics over reference cards. I'm less than pleased, however.

Popped it in, installed 197.75s, and fired up Crysis only to see the GPU temp go over 100°C. The fan was screaming. There was a brief artifact and the drivers reset presumably due to overheating.

It idles around 45°C. It takes a 12" floor fan pointed at it to keep temps below 90 at load, though even that can't handle FurMark. Room ambient is around 18°C.

I've got an older Koolance PC2-901 setup, so there's no CPU heat pumping into the case. I'm normally running three Panaflo FBA08A12L 80mm fans, two exhaust, one intake. They're not real high CFM, but it's always been fine. I popped some Thermaltake fans with more oomf on intake to see if it would make a difference. Nada. (They are annoyingly loud, too.)

Do I have a bum card? Anyone else have this problem? Or am I really expected to have 4x120mm pushing 100CFM?
 
sounds like the heatsink isnt mounted correctly.. or maybe theres something blocking the fan.. but id probably RMA it or contact tiger to see if you can get an exchange for another 470 GC..
 
The area around the card is completely clear, except for the SATA cables running along the back near the 6 pins.

I've now installed a classy heat ducting system (i.e. put in a piece of paper to form a tunnel from an intake fan to the card). We'll see if that makes a difference.
 
If its idling at 45C and skyrocketing under load then im suspecting poor case cooling (based on some of my previous experiences) but I cant say for sure without knowing your exact case cooling setup.

My EVGA GTX 480 idles around 45C and 90C under load.
 
Just now it was hanging around 88-90 playing GTAIV for a couple minutes.

Here's a shot of the box. Please excuse the crappy camera work. And my awesome *ehem* suspended northbridge fan.

As you can see, two exhaust near the CPU, and one on intake that I've "ducted" to the GPU. It's a full tower, so I kicked all the drives to the upper section out of view. Radiator for the CPU is exhausted out the top like any given Koolance system.

I would do this. Its probably a fault in the production of the card.

However playing GTA4 and getting 88-90 isn't abnormal for the 400 series cards , they just run extremely hot.

My Asus GTX 480's running SLI run around 92c at full load in a very well vented case. I'm currently putting a watercooling system together so I can bring temps down to real world levels and I'm also paranoid what kind of long term damage these kinds of temps will do.
 
Tried reducing stock voltage a couple notches. No change. Then it crashed the drivers twice and finally froze with artifacts while running OCCT @ 92°C for about a minute. :\ RMA time.


Everything I've read has led me to believe this Galaxy card with its custom cooling shouldn't see temps over the high 80s on open air in the most stressful apps (Furmark), and not even a reference 470 should freeze up in the lower 90s.
 
If you believe it's the card don't mess with the voltages or clocks. That's just voiding your warranty. Exchange/RMA the card.
 
Fresh card should be here today. I think I like Tiger's return policy since they'll ship you a new one immediately (albeit charging you the cost and refunding later).

Anyway, switched to a HAF 932 case in the mean time. Airflow isn't an issue anymore, if it ever was. 230mm fans are just silly. :D Still didn't make this card stable, though. Hopefully the new one will be sweet.

Second this, things can get bumped during shipping or just have a faulty install at the factory. Good that you RMA'd.

If you are seeing artifacts etc., I'd also agree that it points to an issue with the card.

You're ahving problems becuas the 197.75 drivers have isssues.

Update them ASAP.

THeyve killed thousands of cards to date.

This is the internet so anything is possible. Assuming you are serious, your computer is a piece of shit. Don't blame the video card when you're installing it into what looks like a relic from raiders of the lost ark.

Take note, all readers. You usually don't get a picture, and the complaint goes unexplained. This is what is behind those inexplicable problems forum people have.
 
197.75 are the current WHQL's.

edit: oh god look at that northbridge fan lol
 
I thought I was having similar issues too with my card but I'm using a MSI 470, but no artifacts under any serious load. It just runs hot. I've seen it hit 95C under furmark and stays around 92 for heaven benchmark. It's pretty loud to be honest.

My previous card a 260 was never audible in my system under any games, so having the fan ramp up like it is, is pretty surprising.

As for the op, your PC's cooling needs some serious work.

It honestly worked a lot better than it looked. But I've since upgraded to a Cooler Master HAF anyway, so it's moot. I'd take a picture, but my cam is busted. It really was the card, though. Even in the new, much cleaner case that card was nutty.

New one's a different story. Idle 45°C. Stable at full load. Does about 94°C in Furmark and more like 78°C in most other apps. Happy as a clam there. Low-power 3D is another story, though. Drivers keep crashing and recovering every 1 to 20 minutes. Did a driver sweep and installed 257.15 clean. No dice. *sigh* :(
Kinda looked like the static bag had been pre-opened, so I probably got a previously RMA'd card that Tiger dubbed working.

Case airflow is almost certainly terrible in that case with the tiny 60mm dust choked fan that likely is facing up to a stamped steel grill along with the plastic cover of the case as the only intake.

Was actually 80mm. Hey man, that was a state of the art (in 2002) Koolance PC-2 901 full tower case! :p Steve himself reviewed the mid-tower version back in the day. :D
 
Things are finally looking good. Finally got some stability at low-power 3D (aka Win7 desktop). Noticed the GPU-Z logs showed a slight increase in VRAM usage just before the driver would reset. Increased the low-power mem clock to 388MHz from 324MHz and it's been fine for over 8 hours. Funny, that.

Hopefully NiBiTor will come out with the Firmi version soon and I can just make that default.
