Gainward's massive fan = useless?

For all those who have bought the Gainward 6800nu (or GT?) what is the difference in temperatures between the single-slot and dual-slotted versions of these cards. I heard the dual-slot card makes a lot more noise, but does it really help in tempatures?

I have the "Golden Sample" 6800GT by Gainward. Idle at 350/1100 2D settings is 47C with fan 100% and 50C with fan at 50% and averages in the mid 55-58 in 3D at 400/1100 3d settings. Don't know about the other type.

You can manually set the fan speeds depending what mode your running (2D or 3D) with software from Gainward. I have mine set manually to run 50% in 2D and 100% in 3D. At 50%, it's pretty quiet (with it at 50% and 3 of my 4 case fans turned off via fan Nexus, it's pretty quiet). I'm also running a Zalman PIV AL-CU coolers (one of the newer ones) and some sound-deadening foam.

At 100% noise is definitely more present. At the same time, it is quite bearable when compared to my previous CPU cooler (A GlobalWin with a 7000RPM fan) that drove me freaking nuts!!!!!!!! :eek:

i had a evga reference card that i got rid of cause of its uglyness and i got this 2 slot gainward. the fans are only loud at first, you need ta break em in.
 
Mine idles at 63 with fan set at 50% and 76 in 3D with fans at 100%. Basically I'm getting reference card temps with this card and have no idea how others are getting lower temp. Must be because I tightened the heatsink screws some when I first got it and somehow jacked it up. Dunno how though, was simple enough... It came slightly loose and I made it snug. Maybe it's supposed to have some play, my 9800 pro did.

Works fine though at ultra speeds.
 
Mines runs idle @ 55-58C with 50% Fan Speed and doesn't go avove 78C under full load with 100% fan speed.

Running at 420/1200.
