G70 Vs. R520

Its still worded in a way that makes no sense at all, and I can not see how you got what you say it is from that. It sounds like, at this current point in time that you do need to have identical cards from the same manufacturer to have no problems with SLI....

Interesting. What I find interesting is that the FX sucked after the successful GeForce 3 series. If ATI followed the same trend, then the X800 was part of their 9800 series revisions, then could the R520 be their FX release? Awesome paper specs and fall flat performance?

I realize that this isn't necessarily likely, but if your going to use the trends from before and suggest that ATI is like nVIDIA, then they've yet to experience their FX like failure.

What nVIDIA was saying is that if you have two cards like:

MSI NX6600GT TD-128E Bios 4.1235
MSI NX6600GT TD-128E Bios 3.8123

They'll still work, different BIOS's but the same product capabilities. It's not officially supported but if you had to reference card copies of a 6800GT from two different manufacturers they'd most likely work. MSI and some others add some features not originally on the original reference spec, in this case you need the same exact product but their BIOS revisions do not need to be identical.

Since nVIDIA's method of SLI is "synchronous" they are trying to state that the cards need to have the same type of memory, access speeds and interface architecture, etc. Anything that differentiates the performance of the two cards would interfere with the "synchronous" communication required for SLI. Since some follow the reference specification, these would probably interoperate fine. Some are VIVO capable, some have more memory, some are clocked differently (BFG's OC series for example), these you can't intermix. So it's not the BIOS that's the issue, it's the other features of the card that currently need to be identical.

NV48 is the codename for the NV40 under PCIExpress, its already out. You're graphics knowledge seems a little dated. The current project in works is the G70, Nvidia completely droped the "NV" name at the start of a chip codename, and either a refresh or something else called the G80 due out in the fall.

SFR and AFR are simply another way of doing it. Its not even the same as the Voodoo SLI technology in terms of how it works. ATI has been using tiling for a few years, and it only makes sence they'd jump to it to fight SLI since they already have some knowledge of it under their belt. Its logic, not the "last thing they could use" type deal. Im sure if they did a few years research and wasted all that time, they could find a different way to do it so simuliar to SLI that it would give equal results. Something like AMD's HT that manipulates programs to use it like Intels though they are actually different. But they dont want to wait a few years.

PCI-e NV40 is NV45...NV48 is the 512meg version...might want to check your own knowledge before you talk smack about others...

I think you're missing the point...yes, they've had AMR for years...the "logical" thing to do would have been to release it to compete against SLI 6 months ago...instead of leaking info about it and talking smack about nvidia's implementation...

But whatever...I'm sure AMR will be a great bit of technology...I'm only questioning whether or not it will steal the performance crown back...
