I don't know why people are having sticker shock.
If you look at the DIY kit it consists of a custom PCB for only the VG248QE and a more expensive FPGA (Altera Arria V GX) rather than a custom-designed ASIC.
So you are paying a premium to have the ability to mod a monitor now. As opposed to waiting till Q2 or Q3.
I would imagine once the mass produced screens with a custom ASIC hit the market the overall surcharge to add G-Sync will be reduced.
As we see with any technology, price will decrease over time.
