FX5600 or a Ti4400

Ti4400, hands down.

Got one, and it smokes my buddy's FX5600 on a similar setup (he has a slightly faster proc than me).

Mine is the 4400ti 128MB card, which I have slightly OC'd. Lots of room for it, just not doing more, unitl I get better cooling.

I'd opt for the Ti4400. On paper the FX series have more features, but unless it's an FX 5900 you're probably better off with the 4400.

tough one
like i would think the fx 5600 would be a better card
but running hl2 the ti 4400 would do better

i owned a ti4200 then bought the fx5900 after the doom3 benchmark, then shader day happened, returned the fx5900 and got me a 9800 pro 256MB

in my opinion the fx series was a failure, and if ur budget is tight, go for the 9600pro or maybe 9600XT

Ti4400. I own an FX-series card and am not very proud of what it can do, but at the time I purchased it, the 6600GT was not available on AGP.

I've owned both a Ti4400 and a 5600 Ultra. The Ultra was garbage. I called PNY and complained on more than one occasion about the replacement they sent me. So I sold the 5600 Ultra on Ebay for $110 and went and picked up a 9800 Pro.

Short answer: Ti4400

FX 5600

Ti4400 was fine for it's time, but it really doesn't do very well at ALL in modern, shader-intensive games.

Observe:
Doom 3 1024x767
Ti4600 in DX8 mode = 13.3 fps
FX 5600 in DX9 mode = 18.8 fps

Unreal Tournament 1024x768, 4xAA
Ti4600, again, DX8 mode = 25.6 fps
FX 5600 in DX9 mode = 34.7 fps

3dMark03
Ti4600, DX8 mode = 2092
FX 5600, DX9 mode = 2691

In "Far Cry" and "Battlefield Vietnam", the Ti4600 DOES pull ahead of the FX 5600...but, again, only running in the inferior quality DX8 mode vs the FX 5600's DX9 mode. And, of course, the Ti4400 is slower than the Ti4600-8x.

Overall, I'd say that if it was MODERN games you were after, it'd be FX 5600 all the way. The Ti 4400 does definitely do better in older games, though.

The FX series underperformed. Right now in the GF 6 though NVidia arguably has the best feature set and performance. Don't let one subpar generation spoil it for you. ATI has had cards (and more to the point back in the day, crappy crappy drivers) that caused their share of grief too over the years.

Although FX5600 was not a good card even during its time but it still gives DX 9 support so even if there is not going to be any performance advantage but it still will be a better choice quality wise.. so my vote is for
FX5600

Except it will run like a dog compared to the Ti 4400. What good is eye candy if the performance sucks?

Sorry, but you made me laugh like no1 else in some time :D gj

Yea I agree, fx5600 is crap.

I know its two lower end cards but last weekend I had a chance to see what the difference was between a Ti4200 and an FX5200

In halflife2 teh FX5200 was the hands down winner. Not only looked better, but ran a good 15 or so more frames consistantly.

Now considering that the 4400 is much more powerful than the 5200 I would imagine that would be a very different story.

FX 5600 is better than the Ti4400, as the benches linked to above indicate. But not by much. Basically you get about equal performance, but the FX is in DX9 while the Ti4400 is in DX8, so the visual quality is inferior.

But I'm not sure why anybody would buy either when a Radeon 9600 Pro is only like $100 and kicks both their asses pretty decisively. The FX 5600 is the best video card available in PCI as far as I know, though.

what an idiot. everyone knew to avoid the fx series like the plague. i went from a 4200 -> 6800.

dont be pissed at the company. you should have done your research before buying it. if i would have needed a card in between the 4200 and 6800, it would have definitely been the 9800 Pro.

6800 == gewd.

More like when you turn on FSAA on the Ti4x00 cards, framerates tank. :p I've always said the same thing. Even a 128-bit memory FX 5200 can equal or beat a Ti4200 when FSAA is enabled.
