Hey Gang,

My buddy is a dummy and couldn't fix his FX-62 build he bought pre-built from cyberpower. I forget the exact ASUS mobo he has, but it does 16x/16x SLI and has a copper heatsink for the NB/SB/Mosfets..

Anyway, he gave me the FX-62 and the mobo. I just want to use this computer as a low-grade HTPC...........

First off, since I have this heatsink laying around, will it adequately cool an FX-62? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103050

Second, what's the cheapest price for DDR RAM these days?
 
should be.. the FX-62 is just a windsor core at 2.8ghz.. it will still be a furnace but the heatsink should work..

well the FX-62 is an am2 chip.. so you would need ddr2.. you can find ddr2 generic ram for under 30 dollars..
 
The motherboard sounds like it could be an Asus A8N32-SLI.

I've got 2 of them (one is a unopened referb), and I've got 4x512 of Corsair 3200LL as well. Let me put it together and test out the ram.....
 
Yea sounds like an A8N32-SLI deluxe board.

Not really feeling the FX-60 being used as an HTPC build. It runs very hot and a lot of power.

If anything you can just sell the CPU alone on ebay for a good price. It should be enough to afford a nice Athlon II X2 and a nice motherboard maybe. Not sure what the current prices are now but few months back I saw them on ebay for $130 I think.

Check to see if the motherboard is still under warranty with ASUS and if so then RMA it and sell it when it comes back.
 
If it's really the 939 maybe you should just sell it for the Ebay $$$ and get an equivalent speed Regor chip for a windfall.

This. I sold my Opty 175 for enough to buy a faster AM2 chip AND 2gb of ddr2. AND it was a low power chip. The energy savings alone were worth the hassle.
 
DDR1 is getting more expensive. I agree with many others you're looking at prices in excess of 60ish if you want 4gb.
 
Undervolt it and maybe even underclock it. DDR is about $25 per gig.

I'm about to put my old FX-60 on HTPC duty, too.

Why bother? Sell the CPU and get a faster CPU that would still get better temps and low wattage than an underclocked/undervolted FX-60.

Right now the next FX-60 that is about to end on ebay (in 8 more hours) is at $177.50.

You can easily buy a Athlon II X2 or Phenom II X2 and still have money left over for a motherboard.

DDR2 and DDR3 are much cheaper than DDR1. There is hardly any valid reasons to resurrect a 939 in OP's situation.
 
lol for $136 you can get a athlon II x2 240 and a mobo and 2gb of ram off of newegg, sell it!
 
I've got an i7 @ 4.2Ghz, why would I step down to a Phenom II? Plus I've got all the parts. If I were him I would consider ebaying it. You could probably get a fair amount for an upgrade if you were to sell it on ebay. After all it is the top of the line processor for the s939...

What are you talking about? I never mention anything about an i7 and not only that but in OP's situation and yours are entirely different. Hes trying to bring back a dead socket and you are on the i7 socket which is not even a year old. An FX-60 going to an Athlon II X2 or Phenom II X2 would be no way a step down. Learn to read man...
