Hi, I just upgraded my XPS T600r processor with The PowerLeap 1.4 Tualatin cpu upgrade.an 639 mb of ram.if i get the fx5700 ultra do i have to update to 300 watt power suppy or will the original work, has anyone done this. A n is there alot of performance lose if i have to go with the plain fx5700. or is there a better card in that price range .i just use this for gaming if it matters.

I'm guessing that XPS t600 whatever is an older Dell system?

If so, the PS likely won't handle any of the newer FX cards, unless it's 300W +, which I doubt.

The 5700U is a nice card, but I suggest a 5900 non-ultra by BFG, it's quite a bit faster and maybe cheaper:

$171.49 shipped

so the 5900 won't work either without a power boost, which i really don't want to do because it's hard in a dell.i'd like to find a card that will work with that voltage.

Go with the 5900, and if you do, you'll need at least a 300 watt. If you don't want to upgrade your power supply, go for a 9600XT. It doesn't have an external power connector.

yes, this is what dell told me...The Radeon 9600 is comparable, but uses an AGP slot connector that won't fit in your XPS-T. I'M really getting frustrated here,

please help, i need the best card that will work, with my 200watt power supply.that supports the latest DX9

I have a Dell 4550, which I think has a 250W power supply. I'm running a P4 2.66, cd writer, dvd writer, 2 sticks of ram, floppy, 2 HDs, sound card, and an fx5900. I didn't think the PS could handle it (the BFG guys told me the card takes 75 watts!), but it's fine so far. Why not give it a shot and see if it works? You can always return it.

nitz, you're SOL, as far as new DX9-generation graphics cards is concerned. All of those - even the crappy GeForce FX 5200 - will require at least an AGP 4x slot. And your Dell's motherboard only supports AGP 2x maximum. The AGP connector on newer cards is keyed so that it will physically not fit into your AGP slot.

Therefore, the best currently available video card that you can use on your system is a DX8.1-generation Radeon 9000/9100 series (but not the 9200 series) or a DX7-generation GeForce4 MX 440 series. (Stay away from those versions of those cards that support AGP 8x, though, as they physically won't fit your AGP slot.) The GeForce4 Ti series cards are AGP-current-hungry, so that they may not work properly on your system even if it physically fits your AGP slot.

I know the Nvidia cards are all backwards compatible to 2x but...that agp slot size is a problem if his is the old version...Ive had my fx5200 in so many different rigs its not funny. I use it as a AGP tester card...well did anyway...sold it :)

well the coputer is 4 yrs old an i have a GeForce2 MX 400 series card in now.

Well, that's just about the best that you can do for your particular Dell system - unless you consider the Radeon 9000 and 9100 series an 'upgrade'. Unfortunately, none of the GeForce FX series cards or Radeons higher than 9100 will fit in your AGP slot at all, since they require an AGP 3.0-compliant slot (or at least an AGP 4x slot). Your Dell's motherboard, unfortunately, has only an AGP 1.0-compliant slot, and it's keyed differently from all of those AGP 3.0-compliant cards. Thus, as I said, you're SOL as far as DX9-generation cards are concerned; your best hope is a used GeForce3 series card (which would kill the GF4 MX 440, which is little more than a GF2 MX400) or a used Radeon 8500 series card (the plain 8500 is faster than any 9000, and the 9100 is merely the same as the 8500LE).

i don't no what to do,in the dell forum they told me the best bet is a gf4 ti4200.

And even so, there's no guarantee that the particular GF4 Ti 4200 that you would've chosen will work correctly on your system. :(

Yup, there were lots of GF4Ti's that will not run in a 2x AGP system, I think Asus was one of them.

None of the newer cards from either Nvidia or ATi like to run at 3.3Volts (AGP 1/2x) most like to be run at 4x or 8x. The easiest way to tell, even though its not 100 percent accurate, is simply to try and plug it in. If it doesn't fit (not keyed properly) then it won't work.

Unfortunately, that card will not even fit your system's AGP 2x slot. The key for AGP 8x is very slightly offset from the key for AGP 2x, though it's located in the same vicinity.
