I'm looking for advice.

I need to build a workstation for Photoshop, Flash, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Illustrator and possibly some After Effects.

Do you think a single FX-53 or Dual Opteron 246 would work better?

The dual system is about $400 more, but my employer doesn't care, they just want me to be productive.

Go dual. Most of those programs support SMP that I can think off at the top of my head.

I second the dual, photoshop alone will get close to a 50 decrease in processing times with a dual setup. Don't skimp on ram though for the sake of an extra processor.

Ram-wise I would recommend 1gb of ram per cpu. Also, get the ECC DDR400 if you can. From what I have seen, it makes quite a difference. Not to mention, what mobo are you planning to get?

Thanks for all the help. The dual system has been ordered.

Tyan Tiger K8W (S2875ANRF) AMD-8000 Chipset Server Motherboard
2xAMD Opteron 246 Processors
2x512 MB OCZ PC3200 ECC RAM
80 GB Seagate SATA
160 GB Seagate SATA
Evga GeForce 6800 GT
Lite-On DVD+/-RW
Thermaltake Tsunami
Antec 550W True Power

Only going with 1 Gig of RAM for the time being. I can always add more.

I guess it's too late since it's been ordered, but I would have gone for a numa board for the extra memory bandwidth it you feel like dealing with an RMA.
