I recently purchased an fw900 for $190 shipped. Craigslist seller claimed it was in good condition, paid via PayPal so I could have buyer protection. Box arrived pretty beat up but monitor was packed in a lot of foam. Still, I am having issues with it.

First and least importantly, the bezel is popping out in the lower left of the screen. Far more importantly, an entire quadrant of the screen (lower left again) is displaying everything with a green tint, no matter what I do to it. I managed to correct the color on the rest of the screen using image restoration and the landing settings (save for a slight color difference in part of the upper left of the screen that is not particularly noticeable), however when I change the landing on that quadrant, blue and red swap or something like that but the green tint remains.

Can I fix this with WinDAS? I just acquired a cable that I believe would make the requisite connection. How do I use the software, and more generally, what should I do? And if no one here can help, who can? Thanks!

Sounds like some kind of a beam deflection problem/distortion.

Does the color change when you repeatedly degauss? Turn the monitor on/off repeatedly many times. Not too quickly, give it several seconds everytime you cycle, on, wait, off, wait, on wait, etc. Give time for the degauss (image shake during degauss is normal) to recharge. You may hear a low rumble/ding/bell-style vibration; that's the degauss occuring -- that's what you want to do repeatedly to de-magnetize whatever the deflection source is.

If your monitor has settings called "Corner Landing", adjust those. (They may be in a service menu) This shifts the electron beam deflection around a little bit, to aim more properly through the shadow mask / aperture grille.

Failing that, find a tiny, weak magnet (like child alphabet fridge magnet) and carefully bring it close to the corner (preferably along the sides of the monitor, or edges, move the magnet around VERY slowly), and see if the tiny magnet "fixes" this color problem.

There are more esoteric fixes available (opening up and actually fixing the deflection problem), but the above are low-lying apples.

Hopefully it's just a magnetization that needs to be undone by a simple degauss or Corner Landing adjustment. But it can also be permanent too (e.g. damage to shadow mask / aperture grille) but hopefully you can compensate for this using a Corner Landing adjustment setting and/or a small magnet stuck to the corner.

If you have a Fry's nearby, they sell a degaussing coil that works really well. Fixed a Sony PVM I had that went haywire after a lightning strike (seriously). I couldn't believe it, I honestly thought the display was hosed.

Like Mark says, if the monitor took a heavy hit during transit and the mask has shifted, there's no repairing it.

I've already played with the landing settings to the extent of their usefulness. I've also degaussed a number of times, though possibly not enough. I will look into purchasing an external degaussing coil. Thanks!

Did you see any operating pictures? Just thinking it might of had this problem before the seller even shipped it!

Built in degaussing probably won't be enough, but if the picture clears up during the process (or when holding a weak magnet up near the screen) there's a fairly good chance the degaussing tool will fix it.

The monitor sustained a hit in the lower left part of the monitor, and that entire area is heavily magnetized. An degaussing coil may work, but you need to know what you are doing otherwise you will ruin the monitor further. Become familiarized on how to use the external degaussing coil before using it. Also, low impact magnets that can be attached onto the metal casing of the picture tube may work. It is trial and error.

The rule of thumb is that a heavily magnetized tube due to hits or blows to the tube and/or to the guns during shipping because of poor packing renders the monitor useless. The workarounds may fix the issues to an extend, but I highly recommends to file a "not as described" case with PayPal (you have 45 days from the time of the purchase to file a claim), show pictures of the poor packing and the functionals issue of the monitors, then get your $ back. A credit card chargeback is also something to consider.

Good luck to you...

Unkle Vito!

I just sold my FW900 on CL over the weekend.

This is why I delivered mine to someone in person. Wrapped in some blankets/pillows in the front seat, drove it down to Ann Arbor (about 2 hours). Had to put my hand on it to stabilize it on sharp corners, as it sat on the front seat in the trip and was a little tippy. I read enough shipping horror stories about them to not want to ship one anywhere.

I had a guy who wanted me to ship to the UK, and another guy that wanted me to ship to the east coast. But I wasn't willing to do it.
