hey, im going to build a comp in about a month to a month and a half (as soon as i can get my hands on a x1800xt), and i wanted to run my specs by everyone to make sure im not making any horrendous mistakes or nething like that :)

x-qpack black windowless
tforce 6150/430 mobo (there'll probably be a lot more of these to choose from by the time i get around to building, i'll choose whichevers best)
ati radeon x1800xt (dont argue, employee discount = 50%)
opteron 144 s939 processor
preferrably 2x1gb of some cheap ram if i can find a good deal on them
hard drive i already have
whichever dvd burner is cheapest at the time i buy with a black bezel

i think thats everything. what heatsink would be recommended? zalman 7000? 7700 is bigger and should cool better, right? does it fit? and is the xp-90 significantly better than the zalmans?

also, i need a psu recommendation, too. not something too expensive, though, im trying to kinda keep costs down. im currently looking at the xclio 450W, do you think that would be enough? i might want to change, though, for something w/ active pfc along w/ dual 12v rails instead of no pfc dual 12v like the xclio is. i might just end up stretching the budget and getting a neoHE 550, but if possible i'd like to keep the cost down a bit.
 
The Xclio is a great PSU. It can compete with all other high quality brands, and provides stable rails. Not to mention its pretty damn quiet.

I would personally get a 3800+ Dual core CPU. The opteron 144 might be an amazing overclocker, but the new Tforce might not be able to keep up (the ram you might get aswell...). Not to mention you would see more of a preformance increase over another core vs the extra ~800 mhz... in my opinion.

I dont really think it would make sense to buy an uber video card, then buy a (potentially) shitty clocking CPU (I only say this because you are never guaranteed a perfect overclock, some might be amazing, others... mediocore.). But then again, you could get the thing to 4 ghz on stock cooling... maybe? ;)
 
the dealkiller for me about the x2 is that its over double the price of the opteron. an x2 just wouldnt be very logical for me to get, cuz im trying to stay on a budget, i dont want to spend that much. i dont do multi-threaded stuff, nor do i multi-task. also, i want to game w/ this, and games are a lot more gpu dependent than cpu dependent. im pretty sure the opteron is enough for my needs. only reason i'd ever spend the money on the uber video card is cuz my friends mom works at ati, so theres the discount.

i'm not getting the opteron just because its a great oc'er. im getting it instead of a 3000+ venice, cuz itd b like getting a 3000+ san diego for the same price as the venice. i dont really need to oc yet; when i feel that my computer's too slow, i'll try oc'ing with what i have, it'll probably hold me over for a little while more before i need to upgrade again. then, i'll probably get an x2, depending on how things progress down the road. or if processors start advancing in leaps and bounds like gpu's have been, i'll probably upgrade to a socket m2 etc etc. right now, though, a x2 costs too much for me.

if i was in that price range for the cpu, though, i'd definitely get the x2 over the 4000+ or whatevers similar price w/ it. thanks for the suggestion :)
 
if possible, i'm probably going to go w/ the zalman 7700 hsf, cuz from what i've heard/seen, its big enough that it also blows some air over the ram, too. does it fit into a qpack, or will i have to cut some stuff up in order to get it in?
 
The 7000 will also blow air over the components near it, thats just how all of Zalmans 7xxx series are made. You wouldnt need to do cutting with either as far as I know.

thanks for the reply. so is there any reason to get the 7000 over the 7700? (not including cost, but they're like what, $5 difference?) as i see it, the 7700 would be quieter and cool better than the 7000. is there a tradeoff?
 
The 7000 Isnt very loud at all (In my opinion), but the 120mm would obviosuly be quieter. If you got the 7700 over the 7000, Id say you could see a 1-2C load difference though.

if you plan to build in a month to month and a half with that processor, you should order one now since word is they are hard to get ahold of and are mostly on backorder.
