greetings all,

what you think of this? I have a GTX285 1gb and i was wondering if i should sell it and 'upgrade' to a 260 for about $50-75 total cost. This was I can get DX11 and whatevr benefits i get from upgrading.

I plan on buying a new computer this holiday season and will keep this as a side computer incase any visits over cuz everyone around here is lame and says their computers are too heavy...

Specs on current system.

QX6700 (oc to 2.9ghz) on a dell xps 720
4gb ram

Upgrade to 260 or 460?

If you are getting a new system in 2 months, just keep what you have.
 
Must mean 460. But unless you have a need to upgrade, doing it now for 'future proofing' is an like an oxymoron. Prices will always get cheaper and tech will always get faster. I mean, if you find a great deal, sure, but new cards and price drops are always on the horizon.

+1 to keeping what you have now
 
a gtx460 1gb is no better than your current card and in fact will be slower in some cases. getting it for DX11 is a bit silly because DX11 is going to give you less performance then what you are currently getting in DX10/9 while offering no noticeable visual difference. you will get the option to turn on things like tessellation but again that will decrease your performance even more for something that can really only be noticed in a screenshot. even a power hungry gtx470 is not much faster than your gtx285 so don't waste your money "upgrading" to a gtx460.
 
I'm upgrading from a GTX 285 to 480's in SLI, should be good and hope it lasts me as long as the 285 did, almost 2 years. :)
 
You should probably see what prices are after AMDs new releases. GTX 460 1gbs and GTX 470s, and 5850s are likely to be affected price wise even if you don't like AMDs new card.

The only tangible advantage i can think of is depending on your usage pattern of that PC and your utility costs. This may or may not actually in the long be essentially a free swap in that case, if not save money in the long run.

The other I guess would be warranty situation and your predicated card life, since buying a new card now likely would mean it would last longer as well (in terms of running) if you really do want to keep it that long.

Games still at the moment are not even moving off DX9, much less any really pressing beneficial reason from going DX10 to DX11. (I think BF3 is the only announced major title that has said it will not support DX9, that is where we are at). There is no shader 2.0 vs 3.0 situation (where the game simply won't run off DX10) as seen in the DX9 generation, and is very unlikely with how DX10/DX11 is designed.

i think im going to keep what i have for now. yeah the screen size aint that big but i figure i save money by having a smaller screen in general. Btw i havent found a monitor i like yet in the 23 inch size. Gotta find it at Bbuy cuz i hate ording crap i cant see off the net

yeah that's a really low res for a gtx285. heck I can play Crysis on a mix of DX9 medium and high settings with a wimpy 8600gt at that res. lol
 
you definitely wont be futureproofing with a 460, if you can get another 285 for cheap id do that, otherwise buy the best single card you can afford, so you can sli/cfx later

just find one you like at worst buy then find that panel on the internet. (they get renamed a lot but you can find the original panel easy enough.)

at just 1440x900 there is no need for another gtx285 as even one is overkill for most games.
 
1440x900 is pretty small to be honest, you shouldn't need to upgrade for a while.

Be careful when trying to future proof your computer, it's expensive and ineffective, in the long run you're best off shooting for well spaced upgrade with hardware which provides good bang for buck.
