I won't take up space with the wherefores and whys, but my convoluted home computer upgrade plan says that I should get a Prescott 3.4 socket 478 sometime in 2006. Does anyone have an opinion on whether a new retail version of that processor will be available during 2006 in the sub-$200 price range? It seems that I used to be able to upgrade my processor with second (third?) generation parts at very low cost. But recently, availability of old parts seems to have decreased. For example, I never could find a reasonably priced PIII Slot 1 933mhz to upgrade my old computer. Intel quit making them and the price went up, not down as I expected.
Bottom line question, will the Prescott 3.4 socket 478 retail version continue to be available at falling prices during 2006? Or should I buy soon to ensure availability? Thanks.
