Future of SLI?

hey,
With possible awesome cards from ATI still using single slot in the future, is there going to be a real future to SLI? Has nVidia made any statements about future cards working with SLI?
I know that it is a really open ended question and I don't mean to spark another "ATI vs. nVidia" debate, but I'm trying to figure out if SLI is going to be a good long term plan.
Thanx!

if your planning on going sli w/ this generation you can.

and next generation both companies are going sli.

although nvidia will be the leader in this b/c 1. They have the lead and are improving it while ati is just trying to get theirs working.

and 2nd they have the 3dfx sli tech and engineers.

Not to mention that nVidia has SFR and AFR tech patented, which left tile based to ATI.

I would assume in the future yes, if your computer is SLI capable the more power to you. Doesnt mean you have to get a full SLI setup now, just maybe a mobo that supports it. I think this because instead of buying a whole new video card that can cost a good amount of money, you can get another one of the one you have now. Say you have an 6800 Ultra, get another 6800 Ultra for very cheap and SLI it with the other 6800 Ultra and bam, your game runs, maybe not the best, but it shouldl run. If im off, please correct me!!

Thanx for the awesome replies!

Does this mean that single slot video cards will become history within the next couple of years? Or will there be high quality single slot ones for years to come?

I highly doubt it. SLI is just to expensive in most cases, and alot of people dont want to invest in that kind of money. ATI has there R520's coming out one day, and those are going to be kickass cards. NVIDIA is being quiet, so we know they got something else up there sleeve.

jeeeez i sure hope not
i dont like dolling out 300+ for one new gfx card
doubling that would be quite painful

I am sure the idea is to have the best of both worlds... you can have awesome perfornace with one of the new gen cards, and almost double it by adding another one later... same as today's SLI mobo upgrade path seems to be... :) So, no, I seriously doubt you will be forced into having to buy two SLI specific cards just to get great gaming performance. You'll can play with one and upgrade to getting another when you have the $$.

Your spot on! I'm using an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI but with only a single 6600GT at this time. I may pick up a second 6600GT this fall at basement pricing for SLI goodness, or I may wait on the next generation, but I've got the hardware to allow this potential in the future.

I suspect that over time, non-SLI capable motherboards will be slowly phased out and dual PEG (PCI-E Graphics) slots will be the norm, don't know how soon. At the same time, however, there will continue to be solid performing single card solutions ready for purchase. These single cards would be SLI capable though.

So I'd recommend purchasing an SLI capable board, but you could skip on purchasing both graphics cards at one time. I'm envisioning that SLI and AMR (ATI's equivalent) will be standard features on all new graphics card releases in the future that are PCI-E based. I'm also guessing, but pretty postive, that you'll be able to use ATI's AMR on an nForce4 SLI board and nVIDIA's SLI on an AMR chipset board. Why? As far as I can find in any of the specifications available "publicly" the SLI features enables the x16PEG channel to be split into two x8 PEG slots. Everything else is drivers and the hardware on the graphics cards (plus the SLI bridge on the nVIDIA solution).

I could be wrong, but I could be right...... (PiL "Anger is an Energy")

whats truly sad is that your paying for 2 cards and only recieving 1.5x's the performance.

maybe they should offer you 1/2 price for the 2nd card if you show proof of purchase ofr the first one.

yeah.. and monkeys will come out my butt. uh huh.

i dont like the idea of paying 400+ for 1 card then paying another 400+ for the 2nd card and then only getting a 25% increase when using SLI over using only 1 card. 25% may be low or high im just sort of guessing by the benchmarks i have seen.

I believe a dual gpu or dual core gpu will perform better and more efficiently although in a round about way its the same mentallity.

The exception to all of this being the 6600 GT's those from what i have seen are above and beyond the best way to go. not to mention they overclock like freaks and even still using the stock cooling.

Been wondering, has there been anyone who tried SLI between two different manufacturers? I know it should be possible if they keep to the specs, but i just need to know if someone already tried :)

BTW, the second card doesn't have to be expensive. You buy one now brand new, and a year down the road, when everyone else is upgrading, you buy another one second hand from someone who's going for the next gen :)

ATi has been involved with multi-rendering for years... You could buy professional cards with up to 4 ATi GPUs...
And Silicon Graphics (yes) uses R300 chips (up to 32) in their monster visualization station: http://www.sgi.com/products/visualization/onyx4/
(note the ATi FireGL logo in the bottom right corner)

and 2nd they have the 3dfx sli tech and engineers.

3dfx' SLI was very different from NVIDIA's and ATi's (scanline-interleave), and is horribly outdated. It was designed when videocards were still purely triangle-rasterizers.
Now that we have self-sufficient graphics processors, with T&L/programmable shading, things have become a lot more complicated, and 3dfx' technology will no longer be of any use.

Rollo said:

That depends... Companies often patent their technologies, so they can trade with other companies...
So if ATi has any patents that NVIDIA might be interested in, they will probably trade, and both companies can use it.

It's pretty easy to give away other people's money? How about you go buy two 6800Us at newegg, I'll pay full price for one, half for the others. Paypal is waiting.

If you go to these reviews, subtract single from double, then divide the difference by single, I think you'll see how very far what you posted is from the truth?

Of course, you have no way of knowing, so you're still just guessing to justify you cheaping out on SLI?

The exception to all of this being the 6600 GT's those from what i have seen are above and beyond the best way to go. not to mention they overclock like freaks and even still using the stock cooling.
I have a 6600GT SLI set, and a 6800GT SLI set. You can trust me that it's easier to justify bang per buck on the 6800GTs.
6600GTs are a nice set, but their performance is near enough to single card alternatives that are prioced about the same that it's not quite easy as saying "6800GTs or Us own all, as there is no competition, by definition they're a good buy"

whats truly sad is that your paying for 2 cards and only recieving 1.5x's the performance.

Is it sad that people pay almost $600 for XT850PE when the 800XL is around $300? The XT850PE isn't anywhere near being twice as fast as the 800XL.

You pay a premium for top performance.

omg nazi tactics at its finest.

dude if your not spewing nothing but personal opinion and trying to convince people of YOUR way , and that YOUR system is best then i dont know what you call it.

you really need to do some research and i dont mean at Tom's "i'm biased" Hardware. or Firing SquaT about the abilities of those 6600 GT's
but attempting to discredit me by slander and petty "im right your wrong" tactics is quite childish.

maybe you should look around you kid, cuz every post in here is nothing but speculation and "lies" as you put it. and you are nothing more than the "pot calling the kettle black"

hey man i totally agree.
there is a point where the ends do not justify the means. and video cards have a fine line between worthy of the price tag and not worthy. but thats true of nearly all PC based hardware.. or anything for that matter.
some people just feel the need to have the biggest and baddest when there are other alternatives that are equally as good at a lower price point.

There is a future in SLI, i just dont think that right now, with the current sky high pricing of hardware, that the GT's and Ultra's offer the bang for a $900 set of video cards.
If you do, cool. i wouldnt knock anyone for that. unlike other people.

im not saying any one setup is right or wrong i just feel that the 6600's are a better bang for the buck

There's a BIG problem with all this, I'm not spewing opinions, or just using biased websites, I've done the benchmarks MYSELF on three of the four SLI sets?
http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=881152

Like I said, subtract the single from the double, divide the difference by the single, and you'll know what I say about you is true?
And compare my results to Tom's, and FSs, and other sites? Your "bias" argument has no merit.
As far as "nazi tactics" goes, I'd say you're the one using them to try and support your sad, indefensible position. ;)

At this point in time we are seeing the first generation of alot of tech at a rather fast pace. True, SLI has advantage it is plain in many reviews. Along that same logic some single card solutions have as good or better performance as SLI, at the present. But several things have yet to happen IMO.... a "true" made for SLI game has yet to be produced, we do not yet know the potential of CPUs to come nor of the "physics processor" effects on said combos. I think SLI capable is the way to upgrade and there are many powerful advances in the works.

I personally think sli will be shortlived

Dual core will be the future, you can acheive the same performance but with a great reduction of silicon costs and motherboard costs.

So im sure someone will reply that theyll have dual core SLI video cards. This is a good possibility, but writting anything multithreaded is not easy. When you start approaching 4 GPUs its going to be a nightmare.

So personally I think well start seeing more dedicated processors. For example that new physics processor theyre talking about(although this would be integrated on your motherboard, but its an example nothing more). So I could theorectically have a Shader processor, a rendering processor, etc. This would allow them to seperate the threads alot easier, because syncrhonization becomes less of an issue.

I think the real question is how to get rid of that cpu limitation :p

I guess the Shinzaburosan bit off more than he could chew, caught in his lies..........

Yes, let's pay full price for one card, then half price for the other with proof. That way I can sell the half-priced card for full price later. Yay :D

Actually, it "IS" that easy. I don't care if you have 16 cores on each card, you'd still be able to perform SLI. nVIDIA themselves have stated that current motherboards only have two slots, but the SLI tech could scale to much higher than that.

AFR (Alternate Frame Rendering) has each card generate the next succeeding "full" frame. The game programers don't have to address the cards as a multi-threaded app for each individual GPU to acheive this result, they just want to make sure they are AFR friendly for the best performance. Each card will still render a full complete frame, so if dual-core or more, each frame is just generated "faster". This is why SLI with "profiles" will work with so many legacy games, the game makers didn't have to code for multiple GPU's, SLI's drivers takes care of that part. It's true that lame drivers will produce lame results, but both ATI and nVIDIA have come a long long way from their earlier coding attempts and yield far better code than before, I'm confident they'll handle it.

Multi-GPU boards already exist and have for some time. Game makers only had to code for DirectX to take advantage of these as the board makers addressed the rest in their DirectX drivers.

It's dual-CPU's that are the messy part to code for as this isn't just addressed by a driver that handles the rest behind the scenes. Yes, multi-threading will be needed to yield performance benefits for the newer dual-core processors from AMD and INTEL, but the graphics cards will be a lot easier to code for because they are quite different in how they are addressed in regards to programming.

Geez, everythings dual nowadays. Dual cpus, dual sli, dual channel, what next? Dual motherboards? heh jk

The future? Hmm.. it's obviously going to be an enthusiasts market (business, idk about). I can see a good future for it. Make the latest, fastest cards available work in pairs. Sell twice as much to the people who buy the latest cards.

Question: Is it better to get one brand of card to use in sli? ie two BFGs

What are you talking about? Parallelism has it's roots in business-oriented computing, especially dual gpus.

I wrote " business, idk about" because I don't know about business users. Not that they dont use them. To clear things up.

There's no need for that... GPUs basically already ARE multithreaded.
Because their workload is embaressingly parallel, it's really easy to just add 6 vertex processors and 16 pixel pipelines to a single chip...
So basically it's a 6-core vertex processor and a 16-core pixel processor.
It would be far more trouble to try and build two GPUs into one chip than to just add more vertex and pixel processing units, I guess. Besides, it's far less efficient, as SLI demonstrates. Generally one card with 6 vs and 16 ps will be much faster than two cards with 3 vs and 8 ps (assuming equal architecture, clockspeeds etc).
Dual core would not be a solution for GPUs...
But two or more physical GPUs are a good temporary solution, when you've hit the limit of the amount of processing power you can put on a single chip.

I think the real question is how to get rid of that cpu limitation :p

That's simple, just make the shaders more advanced. With SM3.0 there's already very little that you cannot do on the GPU.... in most cases, the CPU will just have to update the renderstates, and do very little actual math. I always like to refer to 3DMark03 as a fine example of a rendering engine that almost completely GPU-based. That's the point of hardware acceleration. Sadly most games aren't that advanced yet.

i just wanted to show the bang for the buck theory

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=14-150-080&depa=0

2 of those 300 bucks still less then 1 6800 and performance is on par or slightly below at stock speeds with the 6800 GT
overclocking which these cards just love to be overclocked.. they smoke the 6800's hardcore. now i didnt say the ultra's are hurt nor the GT's hurt all that bad but sheesh get real... 300 bucks for 2 cards ? come on already

http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=365248&page=2&pp=30&highlight=6600
that thread shows 1 guys story with the 6600's and massive overclocking on stock cooling with very superb results.
many other people chimed in to report their results of the 6600 gt's
"Coolbits clocked my albatron to 579/1.18Ghz right out of the box, so I'm rather pleased with my el-cheapo card." <-- not gunna get a 6800 GT or Ultra to do that.

If you look around ocforums there are lots of people reporting their highend results with the 6600 series cards. the GT's more so.

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=14-130-215&depa=1
$379 per card. but i think they can be found cheaper.
still that puts you into the 750 dollar range.

http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130196
There is 900 bucks for 2 cards

now..... which combo would you choose given the "bang for the buck" theory

the point is fellas.. pci express is here true. its just a matter of bragging rights or practicallity. and frankly the ultra's are nothing but bragging rights. simply because the GT's can be overclocked higher then ultra speeds and perform the same.

the 6600's can be clocked higher then both, although not as hard hitting as the dual 6800 gt or ultra the performance is definately there to show the 6600's are worth the price of admission.
And for someone to go all crazy and starting an argument over me or anyone else stating their opinion when they themselves just tried shoving their own opinion down everyones throat is childish.
No one here can sit higher than anyone else. we all are equal in here. we all state our opinions.
the fact of the matter is this entire thread is opinion based since the title says "the FUTURE of SLI" and unless your jesus christ then you nor I nor anyone knows how the SLI future will be played out.

but until prices go down. SLI is not gunna get very far in the pc world as an industry standard video platform.
but i jsut gave my opinion, so take that with a grain of salt or what ever you want.

Proof:
NO sources(other than the bible, wich has been proven to be historical INCORRECT several places!) mentions "Jesus".
Nothing from the Romans...
Nothing from the Greeks...
Nothing from anyone else...
And to argue that the Bible is proof, is like arguing that "Fantasia" is proof that Mickey Mouse is real and not a fictional...

If you disagree, please provide documentation, as beliving somthing, dosn't make it an fact...

The problem with all of this:
1. Even stock speed 6800GTs still have a 20% fillrate advantage over 6600GTs that can maybe OC to this level. (and void warranty, shorten life span in process)
2. Even stock 6800GTs still have double the memory bandwidth of these YMMV 6600GTs.
3. 6600GTs have 128MB of memory, 6800GTs have 256MB. There is no 16X12 4X8X on 6600GTs, and that's where 6800GTs start.
4. SLI doesn't lend itself to extreme OCing because the heat from one card rises into the first card.

Do not get me wrong- 6600GTs are great for the price. Trying to set them up as the "best SLI value" (over 6800GTs) is as foolish as say, thinking vendors should give you a second card for half price and that SLI only results in 25% performance gains.

Don't bring religion in here. Especially when your ignorant like this. Jesus is the most known about historical person ever. There is a plethora of proof of his existance, the bible doesnt even touch on all the sources of Jesus's life.

Go off on your tangent elsewhere, were talking about video cards here, SLI in specific.

In my opinion, I would love to have an SLI setup, and I may just buy into it one day. Not just because having two video cards is cool, but because it does get you above the current limit for performance, wether it be due to manufacturing limits of a single GPU or not.

SLI still kicks ass.

Don't bring religion in here. Especially when your ignorant like this. Jesus is the most known about historical person ever. There is a plethora of proof of his existance, the bible doesnt even touch on all the sources of Jesus's life.

I will quit now, as some religous people tend to behave like faannybooi's spreading FUD, not facts...
I you can show me any of these "sources" please PM them to me, and I will make a public appology...
I have searched for 2 years know, and NO ONE could ever bring me a source, but only make posts like yours....
Without sources...
Without docmentation...
Lies don't become truth just because you keep repeating them...

But let me help you a bit

"On the whole, it seems at least plausible that Josephus made some references to Jesus in the original version of Antiquities of the Jews. However, the extent of these references is very uncertain, and clear evidence of textual corruption does exist. While Josephus may be the best non-Christian source on Jesus, that is not saying much."

And:
Wikipedia.org
"Many scholars consider it odd that a man of such significance as Jesus should be missing from historic texts and records, since lesser figures are, unless, that is, Jesus didn't exist, or was insignificant. If Jesus had been resurrected, and ascended into heaven, they consider that someone amongst the commentators and record keepers would have thought it worthy of writing down. Christians proclaim that this evidence is precisely what became the New Testament, wheras others dispute this, stating that one would expect at least a handful of non-Christian witnesses."

Terra - How comes relious people don't understand the word "documentation"(or lack of)?

What the fuck? Get this crap into General Mayhem if you want to talk religion. Jesus doesn't need SLI.

HEY,wadda ya mean, mickey mouse is too REAL.................where are my glasses???
ok,now that I got that over with, what does Jesus have to do with SLI??? Man you got off on the wrong exit or something.

I just pointed out that religious beliefs got nothing to do with a valid argument...

Not to mention that nVidia has SFR and AFR tech patented, which left tile based to ATI.

Remember the MAXX card from ati? that one used AFR rendering, so i doubt that nvidia has a patent on it.

Remember it? I loved my MAXX! However, I'm just quoting something I had read. Could be nVidia patented some form of AFR, could be ATI never did, could be the source I'm quoting was wrong.
