I have a:

3.2ghz HT
512mb pc3200 ddr sdram
200gb HD
sound blaster audigy 2 zs gamer

So i decided to try out Far cry with my new 6800 card. I turned on HDR and started up the game. It looked very nice, but the framerates were pretty low compared to what i normally play on. So i lowered my resolution to 1024 by 768 and i noticed a little bit increase in frames but it still had really low framerate drops in some areas. In the future, games will no doubt look better than Far Cry and will include HDR at the same time and i was thinking what about my card(6800) will it be able to handle future titles that also has HDR or is it just Far cry? ill feel a little bit ripped off if my card couldnt handle games with HDR well.

HDR isn't meant for this generation of cards. You'll need a next gen card to use HDR at playable framerates.

With hdr_rendering set to "2" and a 70.xx driver you'll get very playable framerates
with a 6800GT(Ultra), even @1280x1024 in most levels.

I'm waiting for more games with HDR as in FC, but with FSAA, and better tempered, some situations in FC look awesome, others like crap. I hope next gen Nv48/R520 will give us this.

age of empires 3:

The Age of Empires III engine is a fully DX9, Shader 3.0 compliant engine with more technical bells and whistles than any other PC game to date. As you can see from the screenshots, we have a world that feels bright and sunny, but with a softness and depth that hasn't been seen before. From things like self-shadowing to HDR (high dynamic range) lighting to water that has proper Fresnel reflectance properties, this is a very high-end graphics engine.

good luck getting OpenEXR HDR with AA on the 6800 series, seeing as how its a hardware thing and all, no AA with OpenEXR HDR

i hope the next gen cards support it with AA

the HDR support in FarCry is in beta form

i'd expect it to mature

but really it will most likely be the next gen cards for HDR w/AA w/fast enough playable performance

Age of Empires III...

Mmm, looking at that pic even this gen X800/6800 will be crippling, it's looking more detailed than 3DMark05. :) Definately something for next gen cards.

That's not saying they won't be able to play it though ;)

damn, the graphics in that aoe ss don't even look computer generated, its like looking at small real life models of buildings and people.

You, my friend, need either a new monitor...or glasses :)

If I did a scene like that in 3ds Max, with all those same effects applied, it would probally take about a good 2-5 hours to render on single frame.... all I have to say is DAMN.

I think your a bit too excited.....still looks rendered to me.

Don't u think all the 'glare' is a little OTT? Yes it does look sweet but turn down the glare on everything reflective and it'd look better....things don't shine like that for real....even the wooden floor boards on the dock and pathways shine....

The water is very impressive tho, now that does look real

nevermind.. I was gonna say that i didn't think that pic was real, then I Saw some gameplay pics...

the water still looks like liquid mercury

but we are getting there, every generation, better water...

It needs to reflect less and refract more, but I think our computers would burst into flames if that where to be implemented.

The Game looks like HL2, but it's an RTS, not a Shooter, so I think it will be good, my last RTS game that I really enjoyed was Age of Mythology, also they are including havok physics so you will see your guys fly realisticly, when bombed or something.
