About 45 days ago according to EVGA I bought my GTX 260. That means I have about 45 days to step up on that card. I have never had the opportunity, and frankly, I would really like to take advantage if there is going to be a good reason.

I realize that this stuff is still fluid and that frankly the NVIDIA and ATI cards come out almost in a "Surprise, we have a new card coming in 3 days!" sort of way, but if there is anything upcoming that could make things interesting I haven't been able to find out. Nothing I find seems very sure.

I would only like to step up to a card that gets equivalent production and uses less power, or more production and the same power. So, stepping up to at GTX 280 is out I think because of the increase in power usage, and the 9800X2 (i think?) is in the same boat. Is there a 55 nm refresh in the pipes for the GTX200 series? I could buy into that if it happens soon enough.

 
I'm also waiting impatiently for a GT200b refresh and I hope it become available before my Step-Up expire. If there is no sign close to deadline, I might have to resort to getting a GTX 280 instead (if they reduce the price).

 
As Xil said, there is something out there.....

I think Nvidia is keeping stuff close to their chest with ATI grabbing market share like they are.

 
I've "heard" of the 270gtx and 290gtx over on the GPU sub-forum, but I don't think there are any real details as far as release date and such.

LOL, so true. Everyone keeps new releases pretty close until right before they happen. It's understandable though.

Does anyone on here fold with at 280? Don't they run a bit hotter and haven't there been some problems with failures with those? Would it be worth a step up in PPD/W?

I'm running a 260 without issues. OC'd shaders to 1550, fan @ 75% and no problems. only been a week now, but no observerd issues.
 
I run a pair of 280's (or was running...1 more week till I go home!!!) and didn't notice anything perculiar. I bumped the fan speed up to 85% and they seemed to run semi-cool (well, as cool as 280's run anyways). I haven't heard of any real failures, but there seems to have been a bad batch released that overheated. The temps on these quickly shot up to 105C when running 3d stuff.

Whether it's worth it to step up from a 260 is more a choice you'd have to make. They are powerhungry when running full tilt for sure. They take a 6 pin and an 8 pin PCI-E power plug, so if you don't have them available, you might have to factor in a new power supply, since the molex adapters are only recomended for short term usage (can't comment on how true this is however).

I was getting 7500 ppd average per 280GTX before the 'adjustment', and can't answer anything regarding current output since all my machines are disassembled.

I will wait until it's close to the end of my Step-Up window. If by this time there is no other choice, I might get the 216 SP version or even the GTX 280 if the price get lowered enough for my taste.

 
I'm down to ~30 days of step up on my 8800GT. Been thinking about using it on something quieter with more ppd. The 8800GT is starting to drive me nuts, since its whine has been getting louder.

Well, I am not sure what your budget is, but I have nothing but praise to hand out over my GTX 260. It is a great card for the money right now, and with this new announcement that sweetens the deal further. But, that might be more than you want to spend on a step up.
