Today I was able to pick up a 980 ti and a Fury x for some benchmarking. The 980 ti showed artifact right out of the box and is in RMA process within an hour of receiving it... So I put it up against my Titan X and I'm surprised by the 4k performance of the Fury X. Not sure why it struggles in 1440p.

Each session lasted exactly 10 minutes with me actually playing the game, same style of play for each, same layout, same mission, etc.

I loaded the optimized default in BIOS for my rig and stock speeds for both GPU.

Test Rig:
Asus Rampage V X99
5820k stock speed
G. Skill DDR4-3000 downclocked to 2400.
Samsung evo 850 500gb
Corsair RM1000 PSU.

Anyone want to see anything specific? Just let me know. Once I get my 980 ti back, I'll benchmark that.

That Far Cry 4 result seems so odd. In most games, the Fury X is struggling to keep up with the Titan at QHD, but keeps pace at UHD; all of a sudden in FC4, the exact opposite happens. wasup wit dat

well according to AMD fans, you can only overclock a GPU if voltage is unlocked (even though GM200 cards overclock insanely well on stock voltage)

it will be interesting once afterburner allows voltage adjustment but my guess is it'll be just like hawaii: ppl realize that Fiji was more/less maxed out from factory

I'm interested in hearing about any differences you notice between the 980 Ti and the Fury X during gaming sessions. I'd also like to hear what you think their pros and cons are.

What about perception - did it feel as comparable as the graphs show? It'll be interesting to see how they perform in crossfire as drivers improve.

IMO, the 4K performance of the FuryX demonstrates that you simply can't compare apples to apples in HBM and DDR5 memory, as otherwise the FuryX would be hurting hard at higher resolutions with its lower 4GB of memory and that's the opposite of what we're seeing.

Ok after trying all day to get the card to stable, I was unable to.

I attempted to bump up the core speed by 100mhz. Games kept crashing 20 seconds in. Lowered to a 50mhz bump, same thing. Lowered to a 20mhz bump, same thing. Even a 5mhz increase, it crashed. Adjusting power % did nothing. This card doesn't like to overclock at all, perhaps I got a bad card? Can't adjust voltage or memory clock as those two are locked and I'm assuming AMD locked it.

Turns out, I do have a bad card. The fan doesn't even spin which might explain why I got random stuttering during testing. In the original testing I noticed that the Fury x wasn't consistent with FPS but never dipped below unplayable FPS, it would randomly stutter. The dead fan might be the culprit.

The fan worked when I installed the card and I assumed it worked but it looks to be dead. Not sure when it died.

I reserved another Fury X at my Microcenter and will pick it up tomorrow. Here's to hoping I get a better card as I like this Fury X and it looks amazing in my case.

memory capacity has NOTHING to do with average framerates.

Not only that I think the driver detects the fury card and does its best to keep the memory from being overly used to try and avoid vram hitching....probably does a similar thing on the tonga card that only had 2gb of ram....In the end it gets by with less vram without issues for now...I bet when or if it does the 8gb cards will have already hit the shelves....Conveniently;)

Fury X had worse 99 percentile frametimes than a 980 in some reviews. That's exactly where you'd see issues due to lack of VRAM. I wouldn't celebrate just yet.

Hey was just reading about possible texture issues between AMD and Nvidia GPUs. Was noted in BF4. So while you are doing your benches could you take note of IQ as pertaining to clarity and LoD? Right now could just be some errant settings in game but some are hinting at driver level settings. You know how these things start. Anyway just keep an eye open.

Did you happen to note down the VRAM load with each card/bench? I'm really curious as to how the Fury X handles mem load with its high throughput & whether the driver is accommodating it.

Great post!

@TorryHolt81
Thank you for sharing.Man you have some bad luck there 980Ti and Fury X have to be replaced .Looking forward to more benches.

All i see above is af not properly enabled on the titan and higher brightness. Damn the AMD fanboys must be really desperate.

Some guy from oc uk is doing benchmarks with FX an TX both cards running same settings. Looks like they nv is getting more fps by manipulating details.

yeah, no. if that's intentional i'll eat my shorts. the difference shown there, if it even does give the titan x more performance, would be the most minuscule gain ever, and would be completely undetectable in a benchmark setting if you could do a before/after. like going from bilinear to af x16.

They are stills taken from a Youtube video, the real settings used have not be verified or checked that I can see.
The author refused to get involved in the discussion at that level and is only prepared to post videos and images.

The detail getting less detailed and less sharp with distance is classic lack of AF as already mentioned.
Either the video author changed the settings deliberately or his system isnt set up properly.
He already acknowledged that he changed the colour settings to make the Fury X look better.
Sounds quite suspect.

In Post 2587, screenshots have been posted that dont look anything like the youtube shot.

Go to overclockers.net not UK and the guy posts there about settings. Everything at default except on fury he changes color or something. He made no tweaks to nvcp or in ccc to alter any in game setting.

I asked earlier for OP to look to see if he saw any difference in image quality. I did not tell him what to look for or what vendor. Unfortunately that science experiment is now ruined. One must use default settings if they wish to prove any hanky panky with default drivers. Adjusting settings in ccc or nvcp will invalidate the issue.

Apparently it is well known AMD has better IQ in games. I assume that means at default, whereas adjusting can make them equal.

As stated, he must have AF set wrong, either deliberate or accidental.
Nobody else has found the same issue.
No reviews have indicated this problem either.

AMD do not have better IQ in games, I know from my own experience.
It is down to people not setting their displays or machines up correctly.
Either that or are trolling.

Maybe I should have spelled it out... A T D E F A U L T !!! I already stated with tweaks and setting up that likely equal. You guys need to calm down and relax. God forbid there is a real issue.

There is no default monitor setting that is valid for all circumstances.
You must "ALWAYS" set it up to match the card, the environment it is used in and your own personal preference.

Default graphics driver settings can be overriden by accident or deliberately.
And when someone posts an issue, there is an element of trust.
There is reason to not trust the person who posted the problem.

Hence why I originally in this thread didn't give any info so we could see what the OP could find without influence. I am not saying it is definitely true, it warrants alot more looking into. If it is the case then you can see the issue when we get reviews, they generally only work with game settings not driver level settings.

Without influence my arse.
You just argued to the back teeth about how it could be correct by saying things that have no proof.

We have the reviews, none of them reported an IQ difference.

Ok it is obvious you have some issue so how about you prove my arguing from my back teeth. Or prove where at any point I said for sure it is the case.

Exactly the kind of evasive post I expected.
I'll let everyone make up their own minds, you have said enough :)

Unless you would care to back up your posts with some proof?

Figures, you make the claim about me but don't link any of my posts as proof and still act as if asserted any facts. So here you go since you can't be bothered with honor and respect.

1ST post here was agnostic and gave no info from what was being purported. FACT

2ND post here was to direct others to the forum where the original tester posted his setting and what he did. I even reported what he said he did and my disdain for previous posters here ruining a good chance at getting some proof of the possibility by influencing the OP with what to look for.

NEXT few posts were trying to speak to what others have said, neither agreeing or disagreeing with them. Calling out for more in depth honest looking into the situation. Also explaining if there is an issue it must be done with driver settings at default and only using in game settings. This is about as fair as it gets.

Arguing no one runs default driver settings doesn't change the original issue if it is real or not. And seeing how nearly every review runs default driver settings, it becomes a bigger issue. And given time constraints for most reviews I can see how they might not see it.

Again ALL THIS IS SPECULATIVE AND IN NO WAY AT THIS TIME INCONTROVERTIBLE PROOF OF DISHONEST ACTIVITY BUT RATHER A CALL FOR MORE INFORMATION AND HONEST EVALUATION.

Does that help?

I thought I would save you the embarrassment.

Waffle.

OK, here goes.

Provide proof of this.

You stressed that it must be at default settings and are doing it again in the above post.
Provide proof that default settings are needed to expose the problems.

Neither of the above statements made by you are speculative.

Actually if you you read within context I was speaking to general consensus among that forum and users of both sides. And as far as default well: ARE YOU THAT OBTUSE? You realize that DRIVER DEFAULT is the issue. NO ONE NOT I OR OTHERS WITH A MILD INTELLIGENCE OR HIGHER IS CLAIMING THAT WITH MAX SETTINGS EITHER WILL BE BETTER AT IQ, ONLY THROUGHPUT AKA:FPS.

A little advice, and definitely need to heed: Don't assume, ask questions.

You asked me to provide the questions where you must provide proof.
I have now questioned you on the proof for them, as you have just again requested.

Provide the proof.

I didn't think Nenu was much of a troll until the last couple days but damn man are you trying to catch up with prime1 or something?

No dude, I'm trying to diminish the huge amount of BS that some AMD fanboys produce.
I've made it clear what the BS is and asked them to prove it.
I'm not the troll, I'm taking the trolls on.

I am asking for the truth not the bringer of it. When I get him will look and see about the consensus of users on both sides saying AMD has better initial IQ levels at driver default. Again though when someone says others are saying it doesn't require proof of the original point just that others are saying it.

Go to overclockers.net and look for the image quality thread and see for yourself what they say.
