We have a PC here at work that is for "external line testing" through a standard cable modem and I went over to borg it since it just sits there 99% of the time and found Seti@home on it... wasn't running or anything so I waxed it (heh).

So share your stories of situations when you borged something.

Another 2.8Ghz for the [H]orde!

17.7 Ghz Folding for the [H]orde

^^^^ Like he said...

And I am sure there are going to be some scary/funny things... like when I borged my parents PC, I found their otherwise unknown browsing history...

My dad and his noobishness never ceases to amaze me, for I found everything they tell you not to visit in Internet 101. I still get a chuckle because after that, my mom locked his account down. :D

Shaddup mom!
:D

I borged my brother in law's computer and found porn all over it...... GAY porn.
Not that I'm against porn... or being gay.... but there is something about my sisters husband watching GAY porn that bothers me......

I'm sure there is a good story behind it... but it's more fun teasing him about it without knowing the truth.

Eh. well we have worked to hard as a team for stanford to remove our team status..

so STFU and borg with permission ;)

I think Kodiak Star needs proof of this.

went over to a friend's house the other day to put in a new hard drive, found cpu usage at 100%... for f@h

went into config, found it folding for el_bob of team 33!

So i asked him who put it on there, and he's pretty sure its the guy who built his computer. funny thing is the guy who built it is an old friend on mine :p
Left it folding for him, [H] is [H] after all

My best one ever?

I was asked to check out a computer and do some repair work, and I asked them if I could install a program for cancer research, (F@H, I find the easiest thing is to say it's for cancer research and people jump on the boat immediately). So, I proceeded to find what was wrong with it. I boot up, and it's running hideously slow. It was a 3.0P4 with HT, so I was like "WTF, mate?". Started doing the usual spyware and virus scans, booted into safe mode, ran some more, got nothing. The head scratching began. I kept digging around, and I found what was causing the problem. No spyware, adware, no pr0n. It was much more malicious than that. It had McAfee antivirus running for an activeshield sorta deal, Norton AV and internet security for more active monitoring, ZoneAlarm for a "double firewall" effect, avast! antivirus and monitoring tools, as well as F-prot antivirus.

That's right. Four active anti-virus monitors, all competing for duty cycles and monitoring each other's activities, and 3 firewalls competing. It was my best story for friends, right next to the computer that had over 14K viral file infections, one of which was the entire AOL directory structure.

Just because you're no good at storytelling doesn't mean you need to be nasty. :p

I'll probably have a nice story soon, when school starts again to be specific. I'll try to get our school's IT guy to let me borg the labs. That's about 30 times 2.8ghz and 20 times 1.6ghz. Thing is, this guy should not have an IT job. I'm 15 and know more about networking and IT in general than him, so he might not "get" the concept behind F@H.

Well if that is the case, search our sub-forum look for powerpoint. This should lead you to a variety of resources that have been created over the years as to why they should run F@H. Good Luck!

This is the EXACT reason why I refuse to let staff install shit in my labs without getting my permission, one of my co-workers permission, and the lab manager's permission. Ensures that less useless junk is installed. The number of times that staff members have come complaining that msn or ICQ isn't installed on our stock lab builds, or not comprehending that we need a license for every single installation of a piece of software....

That's interesting...when I installed F@H, I didn't go into my browser's history.

Or.....were you actually LOOKING to find something like that?

But the $64 question is: Were there any spyware/viruses?

It came to light while trying to download everything... autocomplete will tell you more than you ever want to know... www.s.... and you can imagine what variety might have shown... more than I ever wanted to know.

All the more reason Firefox got loaded once that little escapade happened.... no more using their browser ever again... its just too damn scary!

And THAT, folks, is why I have Portable Firefox on a thumbdrive wherever I go. I have to use IE at work, and it drives me bonkers. NO TABS IS A ROTTEN WAY TO BROWSE!!!

In any case, I just clear the history and cache before I use anybody's browser. I'd rather not see any of that in the first place...

Heh, I put that on my computer in school in my Java class last year. The kid that originally had the flash drive with it on it had it confiscated and was suspended for a few days. They were trying to get him expelled because the school's techs thought portable firefox was a "hacking utility".

retards....

I really wonder sometimes where they find these "techs". Maybe they think that if they can get to the command prompt in Windows they are Uber7334!

I was lucky to have a CS teacher in high school that was ok with us having fun on the machines. If we got done with our work early, it was just fine with him if we went ahead and played Quake on the network. As long as we didn't do any damage or get caught by the school "tech", we were ok.

I almost got kicked out of the labs by a "tech" in HS because I escaped to DOS from Wordperfect to load the mouse drivers on the 286 I was using. (This was is 1998 for the record). I'm still convinced she didn't even know what a DOS prompt looked like and thats why she was pissed.

The nice thing about my school was we had no tech's to speak of. There were only two labs, one for CAD and another for Graphics Illustration, and the teachers ran those. The great thing was, they supplied the games. :D

Actually now that I think about it, the only other computers my school had were in the library, and all you could do on those was check the card catalog of the local library.

Some techs are cool

<<<<

Others not so cool. Espically when it comes to installing new programs. Most times I will do something for a student, like setup a camera. But if someone ever asks to install F@H the answer is sorry but we are already folding for team 33. :D

The admin at my high school was also the football coach. Just to give you an idea. And he had a yearly budget enough to buy a house. In this area, that's a heck of a lot.

when i so to www.s nothing happens, it just sists there and does nohting, forefox says that it loads for a while, and then i get this cool blank white screen

Same here, I wonder if it only works in IE...

Or maybe I'm just missing something.

You guys remind me of how lucky I was to have a cool tech for CS in high school. The new guy over there is pretty pants. With the old guy, he used the better people in CS for error testing of programs and scripts he was working on for the school. To date, I was able to break more of them than anyone else.

A few months ago I went back to try and borg the network, around 30 or so P3 machines, all at least 800 MHz, and I found out there was a new guy. So, since I wasn't buddy-buddy with him, I went to talk to the principal about it, and he basically said "As long as the tech gives you permission, it's OK by me". I went to talk to him, and the principal introduced me and everything, and when the principal left, this is what happened.

Tech: "I've got a problem with this printer, think you can help before we talk?"
Me: "Sure, I'll fix it right quick" (I then proceed to open the back of the printer to pull out the paper jamming it)
Tech: "Are you sure you know what you're doing? I'm not sure that's a good idea. If you break anything, you're going to have to pay for it." (He said all of this with a progressively rising hysteria in his voice, as if he thought it would *actually* break)
Me: (After pulling the paper out) "Try it, it's fixed. If it jams again, do the same thing."
Tech: "So, what did you want to talk about?"
Me: "Oh, nothing, seems like you're not the right person to talk to after all.."

It's actually upsetting to know that he's still the tech there, and I don't believe he's figured out how to remove a paper jam from a machine yet. Luckily all the network infrastructure was there before he came, although I rightly pity the day that they have to upgrade those machines. They're still the exact same ones as I was using, with the exact same "quirks". Part of me is very tempted to go over and ask for a job as network tech, and see what I can do. :D

Yes, you are.

You don't "go to" www.s, you just type it in. Your browser will attempt to fill in the rest based on places you've been lately. For example, www.h might bring up www.hardforum.com.

well in that case the first 15 or so are pictures from an online article comparing the new dell moniter to thge old one2005 and 2405(i think)

schwoogie.com (parked domain name)
staples.com (me want moar hard drives)

Funny Moment:

Stopped a few seti@home borgs on some PC's within my Area Of Responsibility and threw up F@H. A few days later my F@H borgs were deleted, and the Setis were back up & running. Turns out a techie counterpart here was pissed about the seti removal. I have since turned him on to F@H with the argument: "Why search for extraterrestrial life when you can cure cancer?"
