I posted this before, but it doesn't seem to have appeared..

On my old PC I always got this funny sound when I scrolled in my web browser. It comes from somewhere in the case, maybe PSU, maybe harddrive, I can't tell. It's a kind of high pitched scratchy-ish sound. It lasts as long as the scroll does, then stops.

Now I've got a new PC, and right now I have Acrobat Reader open with 3 different PDFs. If I change windows into the first pdf, I hear that same strange sound for maybe a quarter of a second while it's loading. If I change windows into the second pdf, there's no sound. If I change windows into the third pdf, I hear the same sound! Same goes for when I'm switching form my browser into Acrobat Reader with each different pdf open. Sometimes happens when I'm opening/closing/scrolling pdfs too. And at other random times.

What is that sound? :( It's really annoying especially not knowing what it is or where it comes from. Help me!
 
sounds like a bad ground in the sound system. unplug your speakers, headphones, etc, so there is no sound output from the computer, and try it
 
my friends old computer does that too.

I don't know what the heck it is and would like to know.
 
I only use headphones, and it happens with them unplugged too. I just noticed it happens when I'm scrolling my web browser too, it's just so quiet I need to put my head close to hear it. Different pdf files make different levels of noise too :/ ... I think I just noticed a correlation, bigger pdf files = louder noise.
 
It occured to me that the timing of these sounds would make most sense if it were something to do with the RAM. I found this comedic/unhelpful thing:

Q. Is there anything ``odd'' that FreeBSD does when compiling the kernel which would cause the memory to make a scratchy sound? When compiling (and for a brief moment after recognizing the floppy drive upon startup, as well), a strange scratchy sound emanates from what appears to be the memory banks.

A. Yes! You'll see frequent references to ``daemons'' in the BSD documentation, and what most people don't know is that this refers to genuine, non-corporeal entities that now possess your computer. The scratchy sound coming from your memory is actually high-pitched whispering exchanged among the daemons as they best decide how to deal with various system administration tasks.

If the noise gets to you, a good fdisk /mbr from DOS will get rid of them, but don't be surprised if they react adversely and try to stop you. In fact, if at any point during the exercise you hear the satanic voice of Bill Gates coming from the built-in speaker, take off running and don't ever look back! Freed from the counterbalancing influence of the BSD daemons, the twin demons of DOS and Windows are often able to re-assert total control over your machine to the eternal damnation of your soul. Given a choice, I think I'd prefer to get used to the scratchy noises, myself!

I vagualy remember something of this sort happening on GF 4 video cards that have some kind of tiny little pezo speaker on them for an overtemp alarm.
 
That were making sound for no reason? Ambient temp is around 10 degrees C with an open case, and CPU is 25 degrees C, no way anything is overheating.
 
Like I said, I vagualy remember the issue. It was something to do with the drivers and scrolling in internet explorer and similar programs. I never owned a GF 4, so it didn't effect me.

Do a Google search of "noise when scrolling". It seems that it might be from the power supply also.
