Functionality of a dead UPS?

I have a Belkin F6C120-UNV 1200VA UPS that I bought in early December 2004. It worked fine until I went home for spring break three weeks ago. Over the break (I left my computer on and plugged into the battery backup outlet) my UPS died. It has 6 outlets total: 4 surge protected+battery backup, 2 surge protected only.

The 2 surge protected only outlets still work, but the 4 on the battery do not. Belkin says my batteries are probably dead. That's fine. But should the unit still pass power through the outlets even if the battery is dead? Belkin's India tech support-from-a-script said it should and that my entire unit is bust. Before I go buy a replacement battery, I want to get a consensus of if it's just a matter of dead batteries or if the whole unit is toast.

FWIW, the power apparently went out a day or two before I got back to school, as I could tell from my alarm radio. Said alarm clock still works even though it was plugged in directly to the wall.

It's likely just the battery.

Make sure you set the thing up to shutdown your computer when the power's off for more than a few minutes. That will avoid draining the battery to its death.
 
The Non surge (battery) outlets probably filter through the battery's switching system and when the batteries fail, the outlets fail to avoid the risk of over/under volting.

If the unit's batteries cost more than 70% of the cost of the total unit, just scrap it and buy a new one. If it is under that, go for a replacement.

You don't have to buy Belkin-specific batteries. As long as the battery is the same generic type, you can buy any brand. For example, just search on "12V 9Ah SLA" in Google and you'll find lots of sources. E.g. - here

If you look, the battery has the same dimensions and capacity.
