Fully Sphereical case design

I still like the idea of mounting it on an LCD swing arm.

yeah, but how? the arm would have to be pretty strong to lift the computer, and not only that, unless the arm curved under the case to sit on the ground right below the case, you'de have to bolt it to the floor or desk so as to keep it nearly hidden. it is a neat idea, but i think it'd be more hassle than just to make a smaller platform for it to sit on.

also, i have a question. look at that model sarbz made. i was thinking of having maybe only 4 holes, and mounting fans in them to jet into the bottom hole at one time. would doing this make more airflow into the case, or would they push on eachother and cause any sort of problem? noise maybe? because i know i'm gonna have at least 3 fans attached to the ventilation shaft (one on top, one on hte bottom, and one at the end) and i was wondering how i could get more air into the case, besides the single fan tha could fit at the bottom of the case.

hmm..that's an interesting idea.

i was kinda thinking something where i could have multiple fans blowing unward to the center hole. something like on my first concept drawing on page 1. but this is a good idea. keeps it off the ground and away from dust. hmm. well we'll see. base comes second :p
 
still need an answer on whether or not multiple fans blowing toward eachother into a central hole on the bottom of the case will increase airflow, or simply act against each other?

also, what's more important, air intake, or exhaust? someone said more air going out than coming in is a negetive pressure set up...is this set up any good?

This depends mostly on how these intake fans are set up, i.e. the amount of space between them, and whether or not there is/are exhaust fans. Exhaust fans will make things work a lot better.

Intake and exhaust should be matched, as what you want is airflow, not pressurized air. This aside, case fans are not nearly powerful enough to create any kind of significant pressure difference between the air inside and outside the case, so it's a moot point unless you go for radial fans or such which have much more torque.

If you use at least one exhaust fan at the other side, then this would work reasonably well. 90 degrees angles are usually avoided, though, when it comes to ducting.
 
so you mean, 4 fans blowing into the center and one in the actual hole to jet it out into the case? wouldn't that put strain on that center fan, and would have to work to keep up with the airflow of the other fans, or else slow down the total airflow?

I would put a single fan in the center hole if possible. As long as airflow to this fan isn't restricted the 90 degree angles shouldn't be a problem at all, and the entire system would be a lot more silent, as you've got just one fan instead of four, and it'll be further inside the construction instead of near the outside of it.

Regardless of how you do it, try to keep the CFM intake and exhaust numbers matched as big differences in those numbers will mean that the intake and exhaust fans either become subject to more resistance, or are forced to spin faster than they're designed for, which will kill them in the long term.
 
I'm too lazy too read through all 5 pages to see if someone's suggested this. Have you considered making it out of fiberglass? It seems like it'd be very difficult to make out of metal.

that's already kinda been suggested. i want to keep it metal because then it'd be easier to attach the metal innter frame to the walls of the sphere. if i made it out of plastic or fiberglass, it'd be much harder to fasten the frame to the body. i'd have to use bolts, and i want the body to be nearly seemless.
 
I realize that you want to use metal. It is your choice of course For me it would be an unconquerable challenge. But I think, maybe, one could build the same thing out of plastic (body and frame) with, I think, a less cost and effort and still achieve the look you want.


I agree with the single bottom fan idea, air doesn't like to turn corners. You may want to consider dual stacked fans. I doesn't increase air flow but mostly acts as a backup in case of failure.
 
try actually making that to scale, and you'll see that either nothing will fit, or you need a MUCH bigger sphere. plus, the cables for hte video card and basic motherboard ports are in the wrong position and would be very akward to get to. and..yeah..this drawing is confusing as hell. no offence ^^;;
