Fully buffered Ram any good for gaming?

First thought is while slower not going to make a big diff.

Posting here to follow thread and see.

Well fully buffered ram was only used on core2 xeons from 5 or so years ago so I would have to say its no good for gaming in 2013 since you would have to use an ancient machine to use FB dimms..

Buffered and registered memory require special motherboards that you would not want to use for gaming. Buffered and registered memory are primary used for stability and scalability in systems that run more than 4 or 6 sticks. (think dozens).

You would be better off going with a quality brand (GSKILL, Corsair, etc.) that is high speed and low latency.

From Wiki:
Registered (also called buffered) memory modules... place less electrical load on the memory controller and allow single systems to remain stable with more memory modules than they would have otherwise.
It would only be beneficial for games that are designed to use above-average (for desktop systems) amounts of RAM, such as 128GB and higher (for example, as of 2013).
I personally don't know of anything that is designed to utilize such capacities and could be classified as a "game" ... ¯\(°_o)/¯

FB-DIMMS are what Skulltrail used, and the s5000/s5400 chipsets. so hopefully you have 2 quad core xeons. that right there is going to be your bottleneck for gaming, since games will only use 2-4 cores max, you'll want to have higher GHz. that being said, the fastest FB-DIMMS are ddr2 800mhz and those are still darn pricey.

bottom line is, if you have all the parts already, yes, use the fb-dimms, otherwise, stay away, spend your money on bang/buck stuff
