Well, I think it is time to upgrade from my Intel 1.7GHz,256MB,GeForce TI 4200 to something that can play games and run apps.

Here is what I'm planning on going with:
ASUS "A8V Deluxe Wi-Fi" K8T800 Pro
BFG nVIDIA GeForce 6800GT OC
Athlon 64 3800+
1GB Corsair 3200XLPT
Plextor 12X DVD+/-RW Drive
Lite-On 52X32X52X16 CDRW
Western Difiral 74GB Raptor SATA
Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM SATA
Antec 550W Power Supply
Black Thermaltake Tsunami Case

Anyone have any suggestions or comments? I'm trying to stay around $3000 so let me know what you think!

If I'm not mistaken, the 3800+ is a socket 940 CPU and won't fit in a socket 939 board. That, and why aren't you getting a nForce3 board? They have some good features you might like. I don't know in depth details of those two things, but they may be components to consider. Oh, I almost forgot. For a computer that expensive one 250 gig SATA drive is blah. I'd get a Raptor for your boot drive and use that 250 for storage.

I'd recommend the BFG 6800GT OC over the eVGA. Maybe think of getting the PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 425 Deluxe over that Antec. And you can't get a $3000 computer and only put 1 hard drive in it, that's just wrong. Get a 74GB Raptor for boot and nice 200GB for storage, And unless you burn a lot of DVDs, I'd get the NEC-2510 over the Plextor, it's a lot cheaper and it's doubtful you'll notice the 4x difference in speed.
 
Thanks for the suggestions Death. I upgraded my mobo to a GIGABYTE "GA-K8NSNXP-939" nForce3 Ultra Chipset, plus I'm adding in a Raptor for my OS. Anything else?
 
That is gonna be one awesome system! I would second the suggestion on getting the best of the best power supply (PC Power & Cooling). Since you are spending the big bucks on everything else it wouldn't make a large % increase in price. And make sure you get the Plextor 712SA DVD burner. It's the SATA version of the drive you have listed.
 
PC Power and Cooling? Ive never even heard of them.

I recommend Antec Truepower for the PSU.
 
Wow, great gaming system in the works, did you think about upgrading the cooling on that 6800GT? Maybe changing the cooler around to a 1U copper cooler and some big copper ramsinks will help your OC to an Ultra go better, IMO

I also personally suggest an X800 XT PE over the Geforce... and maybe try to get an Abit or Asus board over that Gigabyte.

PCP&C isnt that well known, except in the enthusiast market, and i would still say less than 5% of the enthusiast market has one, IMO they are OVERpriced

Well, IMO, you are WRONG. They aren't overpriced. You get what you pay for. If you want rock solid rails and a 5 year warranty, you can't expect the price to be the same as all the other PSUs. Google some reviews, you will see no other PSU comes close in terms of stability and performance.

Oh, are you gonna do any extra fans with that? Also, any cable management (shrink wrap etc.)? Those might be nice additions to that kick ass setup.
 
I dunno, for any home user, I think that PCP&P is overkill. Truepower will be fine, IMO.

Anyway, after the switch to an nForce3 board, I'm out of real input. Go for it. :)
 
Hmmmmmm.....Are there any real advantages on the nForce3 boards? I hear the Asus socket 939 is suppose to be one of the best.

For most users, Antec or any other quality PSU is OK. But if you're going to spend $3000 on a rig, to me it seems silly to skimp on arguably the most important component, when you can get the best for about $70 more.

Yes, that PSU is a beast. It's doubtful that you will ever need 510 watts, so you might want to think about settling for the 425 Deluxe. Exact same thing except it's 425 watts, and doesn't have a power switch on the back. And no adjustable pots. I have one and it's great, although it doesn't have a power switch, but it's about $70 less then the 510. All depends on how much you want to spend.

Either way you can't go wrong.
 
Well, My orders are placed with FrozenCpu and newegg and I went with the uber PC Power & Cooling Supply! I may go to WC in the future and I'm sure this PS wil lbe able to handle the load. Thanks all for the suggestions I can't wait to build this monster. I will be sure to take a lot of pics. ;)
